I?m taking small positions on the Dolphins tonight, and the under.

Technical trends say teams off five days rest as away dogs spell under 34-58-2 (61% under). Dolphins will be vanilla, and Jags will sputter. Looking at Miami?

The Dolphins have a game under their belt, losing to the Bears on Monday. The Jags play their first game tonight. Does that give Miami a slight edge? Maybe.

Miami also has a QB competition, which is good for ball control (and some scoring), and Jags don?t. Also, Sabin is a new HC for Dolphins, and that sometimes means the coach will want to instill a winning attitude. Meanwhile, Jags just want to hit someone with a different jersey tonight.

Can?t get too excited about Miami, though, as they will probably call a plain game.

From a Dolphin column by Carl Kotala, Florida Today:
?Gus Frerotte is expected to start at quarterback, giving him an opportunity to work with the first team. A.J. Feeley, who started against the Bears, will follow.

??expect the Dolphins to keep [their playbook] under wraps. ?I'd rather err on being fairly simple,? Saban said.

?That approach was evident Monday night in Miami's preseason opener, a 27-24 loss to Chicago in the Hall of Fame Game. While the Bears had clearly put in a game plan, complete with a blitz package, the Dolphins -- in the process of installing a new offense and defense -- had nothing specific planned for the Bears. Given the short week of practice, it's doubtful that will change tonight.

"I can't wait to see when we start game-planning, to see what we can do to attack a team," linebacker Zach Thomas said.

From a Jaguars column by Vito Stellino, The Times-Union:
?Once the starters depart after about a quarter, the rookies will get a long look. Three who will be watched closely will be first-round choice Matt Jones and the two most impressive rookies in camp so far: running back Alvin Pearman and wide receiver Chad Owens.?

?The only starter missing on offense will be running back Fred Taylor. The offense has struggled at times during camp, prompting coach Jack Del Rio to say Monday: "We have to throw and catch it better.'' On Friday, he said the timing was improving.

Trivia:
?In an effort to create a waiting list, produce more sellouts and lift television blackouts, the Jaguars covered 9,713 seats this year to shrink the stadium capacity to 67,167.
The team fell about 1,500 tickets short of the blackout number of 49,000 non-premium seats for tonight's game at the 72-hour deadline.? (Ibid.)

Oh, and the Alltel toilets are fixed and functioning again.

We had bad luck with Chicago last nite. Bears played give away vs. Rams. Three fumbles, one lost; two piks. ...and check how Chi out stat'ed the Rams: 353 yds to 274 yds; 22 first downs to 18.

That's football.
