I like Temple at -17

Temple is 6-1 ATS

Temple O averages 26.1 and 28 at home while Miami only averages 13.8 a game and 9.7 on the road.

Miami defense gives up 33.3 while Temple only allows 20.4.

I think Temple blows them out by 20+...what do yall think?

Owls savor their winning record

November 3, 2009

After the Temple football team completed a 27-24 victory over Navy on Saturday in Annapolis, Md., calls and text messages came pouring in to the cell phone of Owls athletic director Bill Bradshaw.

Temple had run its record to 6-2 by winning a sixth straight game for the first time since 1974, and became bowl-eligible for the first time since the Owls enjoyed their last winning season in 1990."I'm hearing from people all over the country," Bradshaw said proudly as he stood near the Temple locker room. "Texas. Florida. California. A lot of people are taking notice of what this team is doing."

Temple's hot streak also attracted the attention of the Associated Press and USA Today polls. The Owls received one vote in each for the top 25.

Just four years ago, Temple was coming off an 0-11 finish and about to begin a massive rebuilding project under the direction of first-year coach Al Golden.

The Owls went from a 1-11 finish in 2006 to 4-8 the next year, and then to 5-7 last fall, when they dropped three games on the final play. Along the way, the Temple program had more than its share of doubters.

"There was so much adversity," Golden said. "This team is 8-2 in its last 10 games with these seniors, who started off 1-16 and lost every game by 30 points. Everybody said we stunk. Everybody said quit, get out of football, drop down [to Division I-AA]. Our kids just put their heads down and kept working.

"This team is different. This team has unity. I was here two years when guys were throwing helmets and yelling at things that didn't matter. Now, I see a team that has poise and that believes in the brand, and that has stuck with it."

At 4-0 in the Mid-American Conference East Division, Temple is in first place with league games remaining against visiting Miami (Ohio) on Thursday, at Akron, at home against Kent State, and at Ohio.

One by one, the Owls filed out of their locker room after defeating Navy on a 41-yard run by Bernard Pierce, who finished with 267 yards on the ground and two touchdowns to run his freshman record to 11. Temple had trailed the Midshipmen, 24-17, with 14 minutes, 55 seconds left to play.

"I'm really proud of these guys," quarterback Vaughn Charlton said. "This is exciting. We're feeding off each other."

"No matter what the situation is, we're going to play ball," linebacker Alex Joseph said.

Now, it's up to Golden to keep the Owls on track.

"My biggest job during the week is to make sure the media, loved ones, and people outside in the community aren't getting to the team," he said. "There are a lot of people patting our guys on the back. That's what concerns me. We have to finish the prescription. We haven't played ourselves out of the [postseason], and we have an opportunity."

I think that if Temple -17 does not scare you, it should. This is Temple we are talking about here so I would bet that you would have to go back close to 8-10 yrs to find the Owls laying this kind of number.
Miami is bad but they have been covering some big numbers and I think that they have covered 4 of their last 5.

Good luck but I would never take Temple laying 17 pts. to just about anybody. If you would have moved sooner you could have got them laying less that 2 tds and thats a different story. I have Temple on the back half of a tease at -6' and may play Miami flat +17 because I think this is a very inflated number.

RedHawk win tough on Haywood's phone

Miami University football coach Michael Haywood became a popular man after his RedHawks beat the Toledo Rockets 31-24 last weekend.

It was the first head coaching victory of Haywood?s collegiate career and his former boss at Notre Dame was paying attention.

In the waning moments of that game as the RedHawks were trying to hold off Toledo?s comeback, Fighting Irish head coach Charlie Weis sent a text message to Haywood, who had been his offensive coordinator at Notre Dame.

?It said, ?Don?t screw things up,? ? Haywood said with a smile during his weekly press conference Monday, Nov. 2, at Yager Stadium. ?That was (sent) before he went on the field to play Washington State.?

It was a good day for both coaches. Notre Dame mauled Washington State 40-14.

Haywood spent his first minute as a victorious head coach walking calmly across the Yager Stadium turf and shaking hands with Toledo coach Tim Beckman. There was no Gatorade drenching, no pumped fists, no obvious displays of emotion. Not during that public minute, at least.

Afterward, though, the messages began to mount.

?I live by my cell phone,? Haywood said, ?and for two days it was being overloaded.?

He added that he received more than 140 text messages.

?That was the support we?ve gotten from Miami and from all over the country,? Haywood said.

Now it?s back to business and as usual the RedHawks face a number of challenges. They?re battered physically and have only a couple more days to prepare for their game Thursday against Temple, a team which has won six in a row.

?We?re pretty beat up right now,? Haywood said, noting that ?because of the short week? senior tailback Andre Bratton (turf toe), junior wide receiver Eugene Harris (hamstring), junior safety Jordan Gafford (stinger) and senior defensive tackle Martin Channels (ankle) won?t be ready to play.

Gafford at least will make the trip to Philadelphia because he is a co-captain, Haywood said.

True freshman tailback Roman Lawson, who missed the Toledo game with an unspecified injury, should be back, Haywood said.

Miami?s recent play has caught Temple?s attention

RedHawks defense will have to be attentive to Owls running back Pierce.

Temple football coach Al Golden said of his true freshman running back Bernard Pierce, ?I think he?s starting to hit his stride.?

That is not shocking news. Not to Miami University coach Michael Haywood. Not to anyone who has been paying attention.

Pierce just might be the hottest back in college football, having racked up 212 yards two weeks ago against Toledo and another 267 yards last week against Navy.

Now the 6-foot, 210-pound runner is setting his sights on the RedHawks, who face the difficult task of stopping Pierce and the Owls? six-game winning streak tonight, Nov. 5, in Philadelphia.

?He?s really good,? Haywood said of Pierce. ?But at the same time his offensive line is very good. They do a good job of coming off the football and just physically trying to maul you.

?The bottom line is,? he said, ?we?re going to have to stop the run to win the football game.?

Golden, whose Owls lead the Mid-American Conference East Division with a 4-0 record, said they shouldn?t expect an easy time either.

?This is a completely different (Miami) team right now over the last two games than the previous six,? Golden said.

?We?re expecting a team that?s coming in with a red-hot quarterback (Zac Dysert),? he said. ?They?re protecting him much better now, and they?re playing much better defense as of late, so we?re concerned about that.?

Dysert has produced 720 yards of total offense in his last two games.

?He is a huge part (of Miami?s offense)? Golden said. ?He?s running the ball effectively, he?s creating on the run, he does a nice job with his touch passes and the screen game.

?The biggest thing is, this is a big departure from where we?ve been two of the last three weeks,? the Temple coach said.

Three weeks ago the Owls won 27-13 over an Army squad than ran the ball on 48 of its 56 offensive plays. Last week, Navy ran the ball 62 times in 69 plays in its 27-24 loss to Temple.

In both games, the Owls knew what to expect on almost every play.

Miami, on the other hand, will show a two-tight end formation on one play, a five-wide receiver set on the next.

?Obviously, Army and Navy aren?t even close to that,? Golden said. ?Jumping in and out of defenses, specialized defenses, is really hard, especially on a short week (of preparation).?

Golden said the RedHawks ?have caught our team?s attention, I don?t think there?s any question ... They beat Toledo, they really jumped on them, so I don?t think I have to caution the guys about anything.?

just my 2 cents, my wife is a Temple Grad and I have been watching Temple Football:scared for a long time and Temple basketball as well as attending games for both sports. This year Temple under Coach Golden is for real (for real in the MAC) and shouldn't be taken lightly. That being said I have this game capped at 31-17 or something like that. I just don't see Temple covering 17-18 point spread!
