We have a decent $230 kenmore 1200 watt wave, about 1 1/2 years old. It was turned on last week for 20 + minutes without anything in it. Now, it runs OK but doesn't heat. The manual says the unit can be damaged by running it this way.

A call to several repair shops says it would me a minimum of $75 to just diagnose it plus parts. The others say buy a new one as fixing a wave is a pain. One suggests maybe it is a fuse, but if it was that, I would think nothing would work.

Now, I'm thinking maybe this is a clear cut problem and someone should be able to diagnose it via phone, I don't know.

Anyone a wave expert that can offer advice ? Thanks in advance

My step-daughters just stopped heating and I took it apart and looked at it.

To make a long store short the aprt to fix it was about as much as buying a new one.

As long as it is not a built in one, just throw it away and buy a new one, that is what I did for hers.

JMO but it isn't worth the time and the hassle.

Good Luck in whatever you do, but be safe when messing with it.

Why was your 'wave' run for 20+ w/ nothing in it in the first place?

We were baking pans of lasagna all nite for 25+ mouths on Christmas. The timer on our convection is dial & sometimes innacurate and doesn't "ding" very loudly when time is up. So, sometimes we use the microwave, set at 0 power, as a timer. We were late, it was after 1 AM and we were in a hurry to finish and inadvertently forgot to set the power at 0. Hence it was at 100% for 20 minutes or so until I realized it.

Yeh, I can throw it away, probably will. But, it's a nice one, has all the features we like and matches other things.
About 5 years ago I fixed another Kenmore we had. I forget which part I replaced, but it was like $15 at the parts store and pretty easy to replace.
But, I had good advice on what part was needed. This time I don't.................alot of times repair shops know & tell you what part is needed over the phone, not so for me so far.
So, that is what happened and why I'm threading.

My microwave has died on me a few times and all I did was replace a cheap fuse. This doesn't sound like the same problem as you are having, but I have often wondered how many people have thrown away a microwave when all it needed was a cheap fuse...
