ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Minnesota regulators are trying to prevent online gambling.

Using a 1961 federal law designed to stop illegal gambling, the state has directed 11 telephone and Internet service providers to block nearly 200 gambling Web sites.

The state Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division says it expects responses from AT&T Internet Services, Charter Communications, Comcast Cable and the other providers within two or three weeks.

AT&T, Charter and Comcast representatives didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

State regulators are also warning those who gamble online that they could lose money and access to their Internet escrow accounts.

Online gambling is illegal throughout the country.

what a crock....

Ok for little old ladies and cancer stick addicts to piss away their social security checks on slots that probably have a 60% payback (regulated Vegas is around 82% to 95%)

the cable companies will hopefully claim amendment rights and tell these goody two-shoes to piss up a rope.:SIB

If we don't start standing up for ourselves we are going to lose every freedom we have. The people in America just sit back and let politicians run our lives and bitch about the outcome. Sorry but this type thing is a sore spot with me. Name one law that ever solved a problem.

More socialism.... I stated this when we got the 'Charmer' put into office.... I hope people start to see that most of the 'programmed' people ended up conned completely thinking, "hell its better than Bush"... It was set up that way... Make Bush look the worst ever at the end of the presidency so we can Clown Town the people on the next presidency... And keep push toward SOCIALISM....

Bock internet sites.... My God.... Its so hard to get "real news" on the internet too, without the censorship of the 'big news companies' drowning out the search results and burying stories.... I am getting upset... Gotta stop thinking about this and root for the Mariners...

The state is citing a federal law that requires "common carriers," a term that mainly applies to phone companies, to comply with requests that they block telecommunications services used for gambling.
But Internet service providers are not common carriers, meaning it's unlikely that a court would compel an ISP to comply with Minnesota's request, said John Morris, general counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology in Washington.
Morris also noted that the law appears to apply to phone companies directly doing business with bet-takers. But online gambling is already illegal in the U.S., so gambling sites are based overseas and U.S. ISPs have no direct links to them.
"I think this is a very problematic and significant misreading of the statute," Morris said. In a similar case, Pennsylvania briefly imposed requirements for ISPs to block child-pornography sites. But a federal court struck down the law in 2004 because the filters also blocked legitimate sites and affected Internet subscribers outside the state.

This will be my last post on this subject. The "liberals", a term the American people will accept, took over the Democratic party in the late 70's and now has a majority in the Republican party. That's the reason nothing ever changes in Washington. They have an agenda and every President since Reagan has excelerated it. When you realize it took Reagan 12 years to get the nomination when he could have been elected anytime they ran him, you know they don't just want a President. They want one they can control. My son lives in Costa Rico and he told me the other day that you have to get out of the United States before you will hear the truth about anything. Until the people realize what we are up against, we don't have a prayer.

Thunder, I'm pretty old.

You are right.... Almost Communistic programming here.... And the sad thing is, we believe we have freedom..... I am getting upset again..... I may have to join a militia or something soon before the curfews and controlled movement happens.... People, we are in BIG BIG TROUBLE... These 'problems of America' we are trying to solve is a cover for the control the Govt is getting and it is accelerating.... I posted on a site some statements kinda like this with a group of people and next thing you know, it was gone... Dont know why, and the moderators said they didnt do it.... Who knows.... But I beg all of you to start barking out and making a noise about us losing our rights.... I wonder what the Swine Flu Panic is covering up....

The 2-faced bastards don't really care if we gamble...you see...they just won't us 'gambling' with/against them where they've got the decked stacked in their favor...whether it's in the stock market, lottery, or whatever. I'm old to, and the more I see & hear, I think I could relocate north or south of these borders in a minute...what a shame.
