As we prepare for the UFC 100 fight card, it?s fitting that contenders are really starting to slug it out in Major League Baseball. Some top Wildcard hopefuls battle in both the NL and AL this week, so let?s make some picks for Tuesday?s games.
Mets @ Brewers
Tuesday, June 30, 8:05 p.m. ET
Johan Santana (9-5, 3.08) vs Mike Burns (0-1, 3.72)
If you think Santana/Burns is an easy betting choice, you could be making a mistake; most people probably thought Maria Sharapova?s Wimbledon odds were safe last week, and look what happened. Johan Santana is still a bona fide ace but he?s certainly had his hiccups, as his 5.93 June ERA this season suggests. He?s still plagued by longballs (though he finally didn?t allow one in his last start) and that doesn?t bode well against the powerful Brewers lineup.
Mike Burns is a total mystery, a 30-year-old journeyman with just one major-league start to his name, but he has a shot for the upset. Without Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes, the Mets have nothing except David Wright to intimidate Burns. The Brewers are worth a flier at home.
Best betting management pick: Brewers
Rays @ Blue Jays
Tuesday, June 30, 7:07 p.m. ET
Matt Garza (5-5, 3.61) vs Scott Richmond (6-4, 3.68)
Does Matt Garza have a nickname yet? How about Big Game Garza? In 41.2 innings combined versus the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies this season, Garza has a 1.73 ERA. The young hurler keeps getting better and always saves his best stuff for top hitters. Since the Jays? lineup is rolling right now, does that therefore mean they have a worse chance against the giant killer Garza? Either way, Garza has a 1.99 ERA in six starts against the Blue Jays, so he?s comfortable against them.
Scott Richmond is tough to beat too, but he does allow a few too many homers and faces a team with a penchant for hitting them in Tampa Bay. I wouldn?t be surprised if he got tagged once or twice. In your sportsbook betting picks, go with the Rays to win and continue their surge.
