Monday Night Football: Giants at Redskins

New York Giants at Washington Redskins (3, 51)

With a pair of victories over division rivals, the Washington Redskins kept alive their slim hopes for a trip to the playoffs. They try for a third straight win over an NFC East rival on Monday night when they host the division-leading New York Giants. Washington appeared to be far out of the playoff picture after a string of three straight losses that began with a 27-23 road setback against the Giants in Week 7. But after their bye week, the Redskins manhandled the Philadelphia Eagles and jumped out to a huge lead in Dallas on Thanksgiving before holding on for a 38-31 triumph over the Cowboys. With star rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III at the helm, Washington is just one game behind Seattle for the second wild card in the conference but also has Tampa Bay and Minnesota in its way.

New York avoided a major downward spiral last Sunday night, when it posted a convincing 38-10 home victory over the surging Green Bay Packers. Prior to the win, the Giants suffered losses at home to Pittsburgh and in Cincinnati. New York, which is two games ahead of both Washington and Dallas in the division, ranks fourth in the NFC but trails San Francisco by 1 1/2 games for second place and a first-round bye in the playoffs.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Giants -3, O/U 51

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the high-50s with partly cloudy conditions. Winds will blow out of the SSE at 4 mph.

ABOUT THE GIANTS (7-4): Quarterback Eli Manning owns a 7-2 record in his last nine starts against Washington. In his only previous Monday night meeting with the Redskins on Dec. 21, 2009, Manning threw three touchdown passes without an interception. Not everything that came out of Sunday's win over the Packers was good as running back Andre Brown suffered a broken leg and is out for the remainder of the season. David Wilson could see more playing time in place of Brown, who is second in the NFC with eight rushing touchdowns.

ABOUT THE REDSKINS (5-6): Griffin performed well in his first career game against the Giants, completing 20 of 28 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns while running for 89 yards on nine carries. Griffin was even better in his next two divisional games as he threw four TD passes against both the Eagles and Cowboys, becoming the first rookie in league history to do have at least four scoring strikes in consecutive games. Running back Alfred Morris is second among rookies with 982 yards. Washington is allowing an average of 301.4 passing yards, the second-worst mark in the NFL.

TRENDS:

* Giants are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games on grass.
* Redskins are 5-1 ATS in their last six vs. NFC East foes.
* Under is 6-1 in Giants? last seven road games.
* Under is 4-1 in Redskins? last five games overall.
* Giants are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. The Giants have won 10 of the last 13 meetings between the teams but were swept in the season series in 2011.

2. Washington is second in the league with an average of 162.9 rushing yards.

3. With three TD passes against Green Bay, Manning became the first Giant with 200 career scoring tosses

The Washington Redskins and their rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III are the hottest thing going in the NFL right now, but if they have any hope of making some more noise and crashing the NFC playoff party they will have to score a huge win this week when they host their NFC East rival New York Giants on Monday Night Football.

Griffin has played lights out since the Redskins bye week, tossing four touchdown passes in back-to-back weeks in big wins over NFC East rivals Philly and Dallas on Thanksgiving Day, 38-31. If throwing bombs and carving up the Cowboys on Turkey Day wasn't enough, RG3 is also the Skins fastest and most dangerous runner, and the duel-threat rookie will certainly look to make another statement on the big stage that is Monday Night Football.

But the New York Giants are the defending Super Bowl champs for a reason, and they re-established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the NFC when they snapped a two-game losing streak with an impressive performance over the Green Bay Packers last Sunday Night, 38-10. The Giants defense found their missing pass rush and sacked Aaron Rodgers five times, and QB Eli Manning became the franchise's touchdown leader with three TD scores in the victory over the Packers.

The folks in Las Vegas that set the point spreads opened the big Monday Nighter with New York as slim 1-point favorites late on Sunday, but with memories of RG3's win over Dallas a distant memory and the G-men's win over Green Bay still pretty fresh, early money rained down on the Giants quickly causing the oddsmakers to adjust the line up to New York minus -2.5 on the road.

The over/under total opened at 51 and hasn't moved in either direction since its release.

The one advantage the Giants have on Monday, if you want to call it an advantage, is that this will be their second crack at the rookie QB. Back on October 21st (week 7) the Giants "limited" Griffin to just 258 yards passing and two touchdowns, and they also kept him in the pocket well (3 sacks) and limited the damage with his legs to 89 yards rushing. The big key was turnovers, as the Giants defense intercepted RG3 once and picked up three fumbles to slip away with the win when Manning hit Victor Cruz with the game-winning score on a 77-yard bomb in the final minute of play.

Don't expect the game plan to change much for the Giants, especially since the Redskins have one of the weakest secondaries in the game (301 ypg - 31st) and have only generated 20 sacks on the season so far (26th). The Giants will also be working rookie running back David Wilson into the mix this week following the season-ending injury to Andre Brown (broken fibula), so a heavy workload for Ahmad Bradshaw and Wilson against a stiff Redskins run defense (89 ypg - 3rd) just wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.

Containing RG3 in the pocket is much easier said than done, and in the past few weeks when defenses have crept seven and eight men into the box to limit the Skins league-leading running game (164 ypg), it has resulted in bomb after bomb and lots of big plays in the passing game. If it isn't broken, why fix it? Expect the Giants defense to try and get pressure out of their base fronts, and make RG3 and running back Alfred Morris go east-west and sideline to sideline instead of rushing hard upfield and creating seams for the Skins to exploit.

Traditionally the Redskins have been a great wager when facing the Giants, going 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings and 6-1 ATS versus the NFC East in general. However, before RG3 the Redskins have struggled on Monday Night Football (1-4 ATS in L5), whereas the Giants and Manning seem to thrive on the big stage going 4-1 ATS in their last five appearances.

Normally when division rivals meet their familiarity with each other tends to make the under a solid bet, and the Giants-Redskins matchup is no different (under is 4-1 in L5 head-to-head), but when these two play in D.C. it actually the over that has gone 8-3 in the last 11 meetings played in the nation's capital. The over is also 4-1-1 in the Giants last six games on Monday Night.

Badger's Pick to Cover the Point Spread: Money has been pouring in on the Giants (65%) due to their apparent resurrection last week against the Packers, who aren't as good as many think. The Skins offense is rolling scoring over 30 points in each of their last two games. A star is being born in front of our eyes (RGIII). Expect a monster showing from the rook on MNF. I'm betting the Skins plus the points

------------------

Giants (7-4) @ Redskins (5-6)?Washington scored go-ahead TD with 1:32 left to take 23-20 lead in Week 7?s first meeting, but Manning hit on 77-yard TD pass on first play after kickoff to give Giants dramatic win, their 7th in last nine series games. Big Blue is 0-4 when they score 20 or less points, 7-0 when they score more; Redskins allowed 21+ points in nine of 11 games. Both teams have played better since their bye; Redskins scored 31-38 points in beating other two division rivals; they?ve had three extra days to prepare since Turkey Day win. Giants looked invigorated in crushing Green Bay last week. Home teams are 1-6 vs spread in NFC East games, home underdogs 0-2. Last three Giant games, three of last four Washington games stayed under the total. Last four years, team that won first series meeting also won the second; Giants won five of last six visits here.

NFL FREE Pick - Washington vs. NY Giants for Monday, December 3rd

The Washington Redskins put themselves in the playoff picture in the NFC with a Thanksgiving win over Dallas last week, 38-31. The New York Giants (7-4 SU, 5-5-1 ATS) are coming off a dominating 38-10 win at home against Green Bay last Sunday night. They'll travel to Landover, Md., to take on Washington (5-6 SU, 6-6 ATS) at FedEx Field on Monday at 8:30pm. Last game: NY Giants (-6.5) over WASHINGTON, 27-23.

Odds: The oddsmakers have installed the NY Giants as a 3-point favorite. The total is 51 in most books.

Line Movement: Giants opened as a 3-point favorite and remained there at most books. The total started at 51 and remained there in most books.

NFL FREE PICK: NY Giants. Latest trends: Giants are 9-2 ATS L11 with a line of +3 to -3, 6-0-1 ATS in their last 7 games in Week 13, 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games on grass, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Monday games, 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games following a S.U. win and 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 games overall. Washington is 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games on grass, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Monday games, 2-9 ATS L11 off a road game and are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in Week 13.

The Giants needed a bye to get their act together. Last week, their defensive line simply dominated Green Bay?s offensive line, in a 38-10 home win giving 1. The Giants moved Mathias Kiwanuka to DT, where he is a mismatch for most OL including Washington?s mediocre lot. The Giants also sat their safeties back in coverage to take away the deep ball. Look for Eli Manning to have a big game exploiting Washington safeties.

Washington is allowing 301.4 passing yards per game for the second-worst mark in the NFL and when the Giants are back on their game as Eli Manning ended his drought Sunday with three scores and 249 yards as New York returned from the bye with a dominant 38-10 victory over Green Bay. The Giants will win this due to their edge on both lines.

Giants-3

The only reason to fade the Giants in this one is if you think they are getting too much love after last week?s beatdown of Green Bay. As it stand they are favoured on the road but at just 2.5 really all they have to do is win the game.

The Giants actually do need this one to extend their lead in the division and they should be pumped to play on Monday night, something the great RGIII is not accustomed to. I don?t think he will falter but a mistake or two will ultimately cost the Redskins the game.

Washington may have won both last year but the Giants took G1 this season and had won the 6 previous meetings. If they don?t own them they are at least renting.

December 03,2012

New York Giants vs. Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins (5-6, 6-5 ATS) are playing to keep their playoff hopes alive while the New York Giants (7-4, 5-5-1 ATS) are trying to extend their NFC East lead when the teams meet at FedEx Field in Landover, MD on Monday night at 8:35 ET on ESPN. The Redskins have now won two straight games after a big road win vs. the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington on Thanksgiving Day that tied them with Dallas for second place in the division two games behind New York, while the Giants seemed rejuvenated in their first game following a bye, surprisingly blowing out the Green Bay Packers with ease 38-10 last Sunday night after losing back-to-back non-conference games before the bye.

Giants' quarterback Eli Manning had been in a three-game funk before the demolition of the Packers, but the bye must have done him some good as he had his best game in about a month in prime time Sunday, passing for 249 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He was still not as sharp as he was earlier in the year however as he completed only 16 of his 30 passes, but at least he is now trending in the right direction. Manning now had a good chance to return to his vintage form as he will be throwing against a Washington pass defense that is ranked 31st out of 32 NFL teams at a dreadful 301.4 yards per game, ahead of only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Manning took advantage of the Redskins' secondary in the first meeting between these teams in New Jersey, passing for 337 yards in a 27-23 victory where he hit Victor Cruz with the game winning touchdown in the final moments.

The Redskins played almost the perfect game offensively in that first meeting while accumulating 480 total yards, as quarterback Robert Griffin III completed 20-of-28 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns and added 89 rushing yards on only nine carries, while running back Alfred Morris added 120 rushing yards on 5.5 yards per carry. Washington also won the Time of Possessions battle by about five minutes, but apparently they needed to win it by 1:13 more, as that is how much time was left when that atrocious Washington secondary somehow allowed Cruz to get behind it for the winning 77-yard bomb. The Skins have no pass rush right now with their two best pass rushers Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker both on Injured Reserve, and they put no pressure on Manning in the first meeting while recording only one sack. There is no reason to believe that Manning will have any less time to find wide open receivers in this game, especially after the New York offensive line looked so great last week while allowing only one sack vs. a Green Bay pass rush that ranked second in the NFL in sacks with 34 entering this weekend.

The Giants have always been Road Warriors under Coach Tom Coughlin, going an amazing 38-16-1 ATS their last 55 games away from home including their two Super Bowl runs where they went a combined 5-0 both straight up and ATS on the road in the playoffs. Also, the Redskins are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games on grass, which is not a good thing when your home games are on the natural surface.
Pick: OVER 50

Game of the Week
New York Giants at Washington Redskins (Monday, 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). All hail Robert Griffin III. Forget the offensive rookie of the year award?the Redskins' quarterback is working on the best rookie season of all time. With a passer rating of 104.6, he trails only Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning through Week 12. He also ranks 21st in the league in rushing yards. The only thing that's missing from his impressive year is getting Washington into the playoffs?which still can happen.

That possibility depends on what he does with his second shot at the reigning Super Bowl champions and current NFC East leaders. Griffin generally was superb against the Giants in Week 7, but his two turnovers contributed to a 27-23 loss. Since the Week 10 bye, however, he's ripped into the division's two other teams, the Eagles and Cowboys, for four TD passes each.

He also has a full arsenal of wide receivers with Pierre Garcon back healthy as his No. 1. The Giants' secondary can't handle all of Griffin?s speedy weapons, and his mobility can buy time against their pass rush to strike often downfield. The Redskins? defense is struggling against the pass and will give up some long plays to Eli Manning again. But Griffin will stay red-hot at home and shine in his first NFL game under the lights. Prediction: Redskins 31, Giants 30

To say this has been quite a crop of rookie quarterbacks this
season would be an understatement. Collectively, through Game
Eleven, they?ve been money in the bank at home (18-8-1 ATS)
and as dogs (25-12-1 ATS). Heading the pack is electrifying Robert
Griffi n III who has held up his end of the deal, going 5-2 ATS as
a dog, winning four times in straight-up fashion. RGIII?s 104.6 QB
Rating ranks 4th best in the league and he?s playing with revenge
from a 27-23 loss at in which the Skins outgained the Giants, 480-
393. That sets up this call as our database notes Monday night
home teams seeking revenge off a SU road win are a sterling 25-
6-2 ATS when hosting a foe off a home win since 1980. The welloiled
machine also reminds us that sub .700 NFL home teams off
a SUATS Thanksgiving Day win are 14-5 SUATS, including 13-3 SU
and 14-2 ATS when taking on a .333 or greater opponent. With
the G-Men bumbling on the road at 2-11 ATS against opponents
off a SU dog win during the 3rd Quarter (Games Nine-Twelve) of
the season, and the Pigskins 9-0-1 ATS as dogs off a pair of wins

New York is 8-1 ATS in its last nine road matchups. The Giants appear back on
track, dismantling Green Bay last Sunday night, 38-10. Thanks solely to Robert
Griffin III the Redskins are dangerous. They own consecutive division victories vs.
Philadelphia and Dallas the past two weeks. Griffin has a 16-to-4 touchdown-tointerception
ratio. He?s run for another six touchdowns. Griffin accounted for 347
yards and two touchdowns in nearly leading the Redskins to an upset when the
teams met in Week 7. It took a 77-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning to
Victor Cruz with 73 seconds left to pull out a 27-23 Giants win. The Redskins did

Redskins backers in this NFC East series are on a 3-0 ATS run against the Giants.
The Giants lead the Redskins by two games and would still have a one-game cushion
against them in the division standings should they lose this marquee event on national
TV. But with Washington being currently 2-1 in NFC East play (Giants 2-2), the
Redskins would loom a big threat to eventually leapfrog New York for first place via
the division-record tiebreaker if they could pull to within a 7-5/6-6 one-game deficit
in the standings here after Week 14. Therefore, the Giants should say, ?Enough with
these pesky Redskins, let?s take them seriously this time.? One game of watching
RGIII rip through their defense only to blow it with turnovers should produce key
adjustments within a New York defense stocked with good players, as the Giants
will be the first of the NFC East teams to face Washington a second time this season
(aha!). Against a Washington defense allowing 301 passing yards per game, a night
not marred by weather should be loaded with opportunities for Eli Manning and the
Giants? offense. NY GIANTS, 31-24.
