Dallas news?.
The Stars still intend to play Mike Modano at center and Pierre Turgeon at wing when the two are together. "Right now, Mike Modano is maybe the best player down low in the league and we want to keep him there," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said. ... Despite a bout with the flu, Kirk Muller played Sunday against Chicago. ... Turco is scheduled to play Monday in Columbus.

The Stars are 10-10 in games decided by a goal this season. They used to own those games.
"We're there but we're not there," said Stars center Joe Nieuwendyk, who scored a goal in his 1,000th NHL game. "Maybe it is a fine line, but it has to be corrected. There are good teams who play 60 minutes and play smart hockey every night - the Detroits, the St. Louises, the Chicagos. We show signs of it, but then we shoot ourselves in the foot and we don't. I'm not saying we didn't have a good effort here tonight, but you have to find ways to win, and the good teams do that."

Eight times this season have the Star played on consecutive nights. And on the second night of those back-to-backs, the Stars are 6-2.

buf news....

With Varada out, left wing Eric Boulton will dress for just the second time in 11 games. At Sunday's practice, Boulton skated on a line with center Chris Gratton and right wing Ray.
The other lines included captain Stu Barnes centering J.P. Dumont and Denis Hamel; Tim Connolly between Rasmussen and Maxim Afinogenov; and Curtis Brown between Taylor Pyatt and Miroslav Satan.

The Sabres spent much of Sunday's workout tending to their power play, which has converted only one of its past 23 chances. They worked on attacking the goal and not being so passive with the puck.

G Martin Biron has allowed only eight goals in his last six games. Biron is 5-1 with a 1.34 goals-against average and .944 save percentage in his last six games. A victory tonight would put his record above .500 for the first time since early December.

aebischer a possibility tonight?? NOTE: Roy in now according to usatoday

Buffalo: LW Slava Kozlov (Achilles' tendon) is out. Colorado: D Adam Foote (back) is probable. LW Brad Larsen (ribs) is day to day. C Steven Reinprecht (right knee), LW Eric Messier (knee) and RW Dan Hinote (left heel) are out.

Sidelight -- Some Sabres fans viewed it as a slight when the Avalanche started David Aebischer in goal instead of Patrick Roy at Buffalo on Dec. 7. Aebischer made 26 saves in a 4-1 Colorado victory and could be an option for the Avalanche tonight. He has not played since Jan. 5.

Notes -- Colorado has not defeated Buffalo in Denver since the 1997-98 season . . . The Avalanche plays four games in the next six days, including three on the road, against Edmonton on Wednesday, Calgary on Thursday and Los Angeles on Saturday. . . . Sakic has gone 14 games without a goal

Last game, Colorado got a scare early in the third period when defenseman Adam Foote slammed into the boards. He did not return to the game, but he could play tonight.

"He hurt the higher part of his back and neck," Avalanche spokesman Jean Martineau said Sunday. "He should be all right to play."

Foote and the rest of the Avalanche players were able to relax Sunday. The team returned from San Jose about 3 a.m. and did not practice.

from the Tennessean

Center Krys Kolanos, one of the NHL's top rookies with 20 points and four game-winning goals, sustained a concussion during a 3-1 loss to Buffalo on Saturday and he is out of the lineup. Phoenix has the NHL's worst penalty killers on the road (75% success rate).
Nashville Right wing Petr Tenkrat missed yesterday's practice due to a sore hip flexor, but he is expected to be in the lineup tonight. Left wing Stu Grimson and right wing Scott Walker are out indefinitely with postconcussion syndrome.

Phoenix is ranked 10th in the Western Conference, but the Coyotes are 0-4-1-1 in their past six games. The Coyotes have struggled on the road with a 4-12-4-2 record that puts them near the bottom of the NHL in that department.
''They're desperate, just like it seems we are when we go on the road,'' Predators captain Tom Fitzgerald said. ''Even when we're home we're desperate because we're not in a playoff spot and we're trying to climb the ladder to get there.''

LINE SHUFFLE

MacTavish skated different line combinations yesterday from the lineup he iced against Pittsburgh.

Ryan Smyth, Mike Comrie and Anson Carter will remain together tonight, as will the threesome of Jochen Hecht, Rem Murray and Daniel Cleary.

Shawn Horcoff was moved to left wing on a line with Todd Marchant and Mike Grier in place of Ethan Moreau on the third line. Moreau skated with Domenic Pittis, who draws in for Marty Reasoner after being a healthy scratch for nine straight games, and Josh Green on the fourth line.
