INDIANA -7

#21 Indiana faces UMass in the Maui Invitational's opening game. Indiana is coming very prepared for the game. They arrived in Hawaii on Saturday and have been under strict rules. Last year Kansas players went swimming before the game.. and here are HC Mike Davis' thoughts.....
****************************************************
"They were swimming before the game. That's a no-no anywhere," said IU coach Mike Davis, admitting to concern about playing in the heat. A number of players experienced cramps there last year.
The Lahaina Civic Center, site of the eight-team shootout that includes IU vs. Massachusetts at 5 p.m. today, recently added air conditioning. But the Hoosiers have taken no shortcuts in preparing for mid-summer playing conditions.
"They didn't even let us take our shirts off," guard Tom Coverdale said. "No matter how hot it was outside we always had to have something on because they wanted us to be as hot as possible and get used to the heat so we didn't cramp up.
"I don't think we'll be in the pool like they were all the time. We're there to win basketball games, not on vacation."
****************************************************
Indiana did lose Jared Jeffries (NBA) and Dane Fife and Jarrad Odle even with these losses Indiana still has a great returning roster. Tom Coverdale, Kyle Hornesby will be running guards along with Jeff Newton and A.J. Moye will be at forwards and George Leach will be at center. Indiana will also have all american Bracey Wright (Indiana's top recruit).
UMass went 14-16 under Steve Lappas' first year. Umass has 4 incoming freshman along with UConn transfer Marcus Cox. Umass' center Micah Brand leads the UMass team but will not be 100% with a sore ankle. This game shouldnt be very hard for IU. They have the far more talanted team and along with hot 3 point shooters and better coaching will be able to cover easily. Look for inexperience to show on UMass end!

PENNSYLVANIA -13.5

Penn is coming into tonights game by totally destroying Penn St on Nov 23rd 62-37. 4 of Penn's starters which avg'ed double digits last year picked it right back up where they left off, Onyekwe (15), Toole (14), Archibong (13) and Schiffner (12) each scored in double-digits in Penn's season-opening victory on Nov. 23. With the win, Penn's regular season win streak is up 11 games going back to Feb 9th of last year! Drexel comes into the game after losing to Villanova 64-41. Robert Battle had 12 points for Drexel, while Phil Goss had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. The Dragons shot just 25 percent from the floor, but did force Villanova into 18 turnovers on the night. Drexel was outrebounded, 47-30, and made just six of its 24 three-point attempts for the game. They were also held to just 17 points in the second half. Last time Penn and Drexel hooked up was back on Nov 28th of last year in which Penn won 89-80. Penn has a great team this year. Look for smart basketball and high percentage shots. Look for a close game off the start but just like Drexel did against Villanova, they will lose on the boards and in lack the experience Penn has. This game will get put away in the second half quickly!

Penn 70 Drexel 51

Duke -27.5

Okay.. lets some this one up quickly....

  • Duke enters the game with a 15-game winning streak vs. the Wildcats.
  • The Blue Devils have scored at least 100 points in six of the last 10 contests in the series, including last year's 106-71 victory in Charlotte.
  • Under Mike Krzyzewski, Duke is 16-1 vs. Davidson.
  • The Blue Devils own a 132-29 all-time record vs. teams currently competing in the Southern Conference, including their 80-17 mark vs. Davidson.
  • The Blue Devils' last loss to a SoCon team was a 75-73 setback to Davidson on Dec. 29, 1981, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
  • Duke has posted an amazing 61-8 record during the month of November in 23 years under Mike Krzyzewski, including its 101-53 victory over Army two days ago.
  • Duke returns eight letterwinners and two starters - All-America candidates Chris Duhon, the preseason ACC Player of the Year, and Dahntay Jones - in 2002-03.
  • The Blue Devils return 35 percent of their scoring, 44 percent of their rebounding and 51 percent of their assist totals from last season.
  • Duke enters the Davidson game with a 14-game home winning streak intact dating back to the beginning of last season. The 2001-02 campaign in which Duke finished 13-0 at home marked the 13th time in school history the Blue Devils did not lose at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

All I can say is... U G L Y, you aint got no alaby(sp?) you ugly! you ugly! your momma says you ugly!

KENTUCKY -8

Kentucky comes into this game matched up against Arizona St in the opening round of the Maui Invitational. The Wildcats are 81-18 in season openers. This will be the third trip for Kentucky to the Maui Invitational. In 1993 they won the crown and in 1997 they took 3rd place after losing to top ranked Arizona. Overall Kentucky is 5-1 in Maui games. Junior Erik Daniels will miss the Wildcats' first four games due to violating NCAA rules governing summer league play. Daniels had permission to play in a summer league in Lexington, but when he returned home to Cincinnati, he participated in a second summer league. UK asked the NCAA to reconsider but its appeal was denied. The 6-8 forward is scheduled to return against North Carolina on Dec. 7. Kentucky will rely on Keith Bogans and Marquis Estill this season. Bogans averaged 11.5 ppg and should be there best offensive weapon. Bogans averaged 8.9ppg and shot 61%+ in 2 seasons so far. Also returning as starters for the Wildcats' opener are junior guards Gerald Fitch and Antwain Barbour. Sophomore Chuck Hayes will take Prince's vacated forward spot. The Sun Devils, who have lost their two previous meetings with Kentucky, including a 97-73 setback in the 1995 NCAA tournament, opened their season with a 59-56 victory over Morehead State on Friday. Kentucky should be well prepared for ASU after playing sloppy ball and even losing an exhibition game. If ASU plays man to man instead of a zone, Kentucky should easily be able to cover this one. If ASU plays a zone defense look for a close game but I cant see ASU competing against a more talanted Kentucky team. They struggled and had to fight off Morehead state on friday. Kentucky will have over 300 fans attending the game that did fly out for the game in a stadium which only holds 1200. Look for a nice sized crowd and a nice ESPN showing by Kentucky.

Magic,
Charmanade's(the host team) stadium only holds about 1200 and gets VERY hot during this time of year. Look for conservative ball from UMass and what should be some lackadazical ball in the first 4 minutes. They did install some AC but dont know how much it can help.

VMI +16

This is a play more against Tenn then a play for VMI. VMI is coming off of a win against Liberty on Saturday 68-54. Sophmore Jason Conley led all scorers with 23 points and junior guard Ben Rand added 13 points, Junior point guard Richard Little dished out a career high 12 assists. The player to watch in this game is Jason Conley which is probably the best player no one knows about. As a freshman he lead division 1A in scoring 29.3 ppg. Saturday's game marked the 13th consecutive game of 20 points or more going back to alst year. Finishing with 23 he didn't even score a point until 11:00 in the second half. While VMI didn't play a pretty offensive game they held Liberty to just 14 field goals! Junior forward Radee Skipworth didn't start the game on saturday but did come off the bench to score 13 points and 2 rebounds in just 15 minutes of action. He had been sidelined with a deep thigh bruise. Skipworth was second in the team in scoring averaging 14.9 pp and second in rebounding with 4.9 rpg.
VMI wore their black road uniforms in Saturday's home opener against Liberty in memory of Chad Kenna '02, a guard on the basketball team from 1999-2002 who died in his sleep of a heart ailment on August 30, 2002 in Springfield, Va. Kenna was also a
standout on the VMI golf team. The Keydets are dedicating the season in Chad's memory, and forward Zach Batte, a former roomate, is wearing his #24 jersey. Look for VMI not to give up in this game. Tennessee was struggled and IMO the linesmakers are giving way too much credit to this team to start off the season. Look for Jason Conley to put up atleast 28 against Tenn and for VMI to hang tough the whole way thru.

Tennessee 64 VMI 55
