MONTREAL (AP) -- Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu has a career-threatening illness that will sideline him for the entire season, the Montreal Gazette reported Thursday.

The Gazette, quoting an unidentified source, said that Koivu's teammates were instructed to report to the Molson Centre on Thursday where they'll be informed about the results of tests taken at the Montreal General Hospital.

Koivu has been hospitalized for treatment of vomiting and abdominal pain following his arrival from Finland on Monday.

``We want the players and his family to know exactly what the tests have shown before anyone else is told,'' the source said.

The Canadiens scheduled a news conference for Thursday to provide an update on Koivu's condition.

Teammates Brian Savage and Craig Rivet visited Koivu on Wednesday.

``He wasn't feeling very good,'' Savage told the Gazette. ``He was white as a ghost. We didn't talk a lot. He was waiting to hear from the doctors. It doesn't look very good.''

Koivu's NHL career has been plagued with injuries. He missed 28 games last season with a knee injury that required surgery.

The 26-year-old center had 17 goals and 30 assists in 54 games last season, and has 85 goals and 185 assists in 344 games in six seasons with Montreal.

This is definetly sad news, sad day for hockey fans.

It was stated he requested his teammates to bring him a copy of Lance Armstrong's book, being an individual who recovered from cancer himself.

My prayers are with him and his family, God Bless

AMEN
