finally had a chance to see a show on Saturday. Black Hawk Down will make over $100million at box office (not bad) but was not nominated for best picture.
Director Ridley Scot is nominated for an oscar.
the story is about small group of US soldiers who try to arrest some local warlords in Somalia. They were sent there by the UN United Nations (well also by the US government). you quickly realize that there is no way they should even be there, about 10 minutes into the movie.
anyways half the people I went with thought it was okay:nothing special and yes a little slow.
I however enjoyed the film and thought it should have been nominated for best picture. the film is basically about the battle that takes place when they try to raid this building and try to arrest some warlords. It is a mess almost from the very beginning. of coarse they should have not been there to begin with.
anyways good acting and it is based on a true story and does not drift or try to change the story. would rank highly in the war genre movies that I have saw.
by the way it is based on a book by Mark Bowden and stays fairly close to it. good acting and you get a sense of how brave some of these soldiers are, there is no way I would have landed to try to save the chopper pilot (have to see the movie). I hope there families are looked after and not forgotten.
anyways the US left soon after the death of the 18 soldiers, the film also tells you many facts in the ending credits. except one of the main characters (lead character leader of the rangers) dies shortly after this event by a shell landing on his building: accident. guess they thought that may be to depressing.
anyways liked the movie, and would suggest it is worth seeing, hopefully extra footage on a DVD would like to know more about the UN mission.
thanks
