Any suggestions on how to find one that's reputable and is not going to break our stuff? 2BR apt, moving distance is about 600 miles. There are a ton of companies out there it's hard to differentiate.

Vegas Baby !!
Don't know how hands on you are, but...............

Last summer when I moved to Vegas from Ohio, ( 2200 miles) , I BOUGHT a U Haul truck off of EBAY, and bought an enclosed trailer for my Harley.

Upon arrival in Vegas, I resold them both on EBAY within a week , and made $ 660 profit !!

Sure beat the $1700 they , (Uhaul) , wanted to rent the truck. and another dime for the trailer.

First time a plan EVER worked in my favor !!:00hour

You're not really going to get any good gouge one way or another on this topic dude. Moving companies are huge. With each driven by the people in that location.

That's like getting advice to not shop at the local 7-11 from someone three states over from you. Theirs might be run my dummies, but yours could be great.

Basically, get 3-4 movers to show up and give you a quote. If they are reputable places (i.e, big known names) they are all going to have standard packing materials and take care of things for you. What you need to pay attention to is when they actually pack your shit. When doing the estimate they are going to have someone come out and blow smoke and tell you how they do this and that during the move and blah blah blah. Then on pack up day they have 3 grunts come out that they picked up at the local staffing agency for 10 bucks an hour to pack your stuff. This is where you need to be constantly walking around the house and watching and observing. Make sure they are wrapping stuff up right, make sure they are not pocketing anything. One time I had a donkey pocket one of my credit cards from a dresser drawer and went on a shopping spree 3 weeks later.

Then the driver will come within a few days and load the stuff up and do inventory. Pay attention on this day as well. Make sure you have labeled the fragile boxes and all that type of stuff. Make sure he knows where those boxes are so they arent lumped in the bottom.

The only way to really protect yourself is to get pictures or videotape of EVERYTHING. Make a very detailed list of all your crap as well. They will do inventory as well.

But really, you are moving all your stuff in boxes on a truck 600 miles. If you dont have anything broken I would be surprised. Not major broken, but things get jarred around a lil bit. it's expected.

anyway, that is what the insurance is for. It likely wont be anything too terrible - maybe a few drinking glasses or something here and there. or an old picture frame gets a crack. whoopy.

I've done well over a dozen household moves in my time. Its not fun, its stressful. Keep track of your crap and get pictures of everything. Dont expect everything to be super perfect and be flexible. Dont cry over a broken drinking glass.

Basically, this is the time when you find out just how wore out and crappy your stuff is. :)

The last move we did - 3BR 2000sq ft house, family of four and moved 800 miles, I think I had 2 drinking glasses crack. no big deal.
