Nadal the favorite going into 2008 U.S. Open
Rafael Nadal heads into next week?s U.S. Open Tennis Championships ranked No. 1 in the world, and he?s also the favorite to win the men?s title at betED.com.
Nadal, also the No. 1 seed, is a +175 favorite to win the 2008 U.S. Open in Tennis Betting odds at betED.com.
It marks the first time since January, 2004 that someone other than Roger Federer has held the No. 1 seed going into a Grand Slam tournament. Nadal overtook Federer as the top men?s player on the planet earlier this month.
Federer, now world No. 2, is at +225 odds to win the men?s U.S. Open title at betED.com.
World No. 3 Novak Djokovic, the third seed at the U.S. Open, is at +275 odds to win the men?s title.
Nadal has had a breakout year, winning the men?s championship at Wimbledon last month in a final against Federer that many consider the best tennis match ever played. He also won the French Open and a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics last week.
Nadal has never been beyond the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows, while Federer has won the past four U.S. Open championships.
But Federer has struggled all year and has been defeated in the three tournaments he has played since Wimbledon. Last week, he was knocked out in the quarterfinals at the Olympics by James Blake of the U.S.
Scotland?s Andy Murray, the world No. 6 who beat Djokovic in the final at the 2008 Cincinnati Masters this month, is +750 to win the U.S. Open. The rest of the field is far back, including 8th-ranked Andy Roddick of the U.S., who?s at +3500.
The 2008 U.S. Open starts Monday and can be seen on USA. CBS Sports' coverage begins on Saturday, August 30 with men's and women's third-round action.
