how the mighty have fallen. nc state, last year's march heroes, tonight face elimination from, not just the ncaa tournament but also the acc tournament, with a loss to the pitt panthers. the acc didn't change its tournament format after the expansion addition of cal, stanford and smu last year, so the bottom three regular season finishers will be left out of the conference tournament. for the pack to make it in, they need notre dame to lose their last two home games against stanford and cal and they need to win tonight and saturday night in miami. they would then win the tie breaker by virtue of their regular season win against the irish.
sounds improbable i know. the predictive models ive seen give the pack a 7% chance of making the acc tourney. i don't normally place a lot of weight on senior night but tonight i'll make an exception. wolfpack has 6 seniors on the team. 4 of them - breon pass, ben middlebrook, jayden taylor and michael mcdonnel - played significant roles in that memorable run. and say what you want, but we all know that run was sparked by team leadership, notably the two dj,s, as opposed to coaching leadership. if there was ever going to be a chance for this year's seniors to step up one more time, tonight is it.
