According to betED.com, the Top 5 favorites to win the 2008 National Championship are: USC Trojans (+200); Michigan Wolverines (+450); Texas Longhorns (+700); LSU Tigers (+700); Florida Gators (+750).
Head Coach Pete Carroll, heading into his 7th year at USC, has 16 starters returning from last year?s squad, which was 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the PAC-10 Conference. The Trojans tied for first-place in the PAC-10 and went on to their 6th consecutive bowl appearance, beating Michigan 32-18 in the Rose Bowl.
One of the reasons the Trojans are appearing at the top of many preview polls is their standout quarterback, John David Booty, an early Heisman Trophy candidate. Last season, Booty led the USC offense, which averaged of 30.5 PPG, with 29 TDs and a completion rate of nearly 62 per cent. He?ll be working with lots of depth at both the receiver and running back positions this season.
And the Trojans are just as solid on the defensive side of the ball, with 10 starters returning from a team that surrendered a paltry 15.2 PPG last season.
Meanwhile, Michigan HC Lloyd Carr, in his 12th year with the Wolverines, has 14 starters coming back from a team that was 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten Conference.
Included in that group is a QB considered nearly as strong as Booty: Chad Henne, who last season threw for 2,526 yards, including 23 TDs and only eight interceptions.
