Since 2008, the Irish have averaged a little over 10 drives against service academies.

Inexperienced QB on an offense that doesn't yet have a go to guy without a running back with any extensive experience. With self-inflicted mistakes killing 4 or 5 drives, the Irish should have only 5 or 6drives to score. . . in Dublin weather

16 and 57 points seem pretty high

From NFL games I've watched on soccer pitches, seems like the grass is not the same, gets more chopped up. Making things more sloppy. I kind of like the under - no idea whatsoever what a Dublin turf is like, but thats my gut feeling.

was considering the Under. The Irish staff have likely finally devoted the necessary time to defending the option since this is game #1 as opposed to just 1 week of prep. Or at least that use to be their excuse.

Concur mr poon. ND has time to prepare for this. That option attack will not work. Add to it a soupy field and this will not be pretty. 21-7 ND.

I think the initial excuse was that the option was undefendable. They've gotten better at it and it may have coincided with Navy not having a strong QB and better defensive linemen.

The new Wembley pitch is choppier than most because they have to re-sod it all the time. This field should be better, but it won't be normal NCAA quality.

wouldn't look too much into weather. am in the UK and weather forecast for the weekend is an absolute crap shoot and you really never know what youre going to get. lucky if 24 hours in advance is accurate.

if the field is soaked and soggy, think it helps ND much more than it helps navy.

was asking a soccer fan about Wembley Stadium vs. Aviva conditions. Sounds like the field should be in pretty good shape. Still like the Under, but field shouldn't be a factor

Aviva Stadium to reap benefits of turf technology

The Aviva Stadium in Dublin will host its first action this week when the Combined Provinces Rugby Fixture between Leinster & Ulster v Connacht & Munster takes place on the venue?s new pitch.

The Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) worked closely with stadium architect Populous on the design and specification of the pitch, including a detailed light and shading analysis and the installation of the latest under-soil heating and irrigation systems to ensure playability all year round.

STRI?s team, led by Richard Hayden, who managed the successful delivery of all the pitches at the recent World Cup in South Africa, produced the design, oversaw the pitch installation and has provided onsite monitoring to determine the quality of the pitch performance.

A key element of STRI?s pitch design is the inclusion of a fibre elastic system ? called Fibrelastic and supplied by Mansfield Sand ? which is one of the latest developments in pitch rootzone technology. This particular grass root reinforcement lessens the surface hardness, reducing the risk of player injury, and improves both the surface resilience and traction. These improvements in pitch quality were validated by STRI, following a two-year fibre reinforcement research programme at its trial grounds in Bingley, West Yorkshire.

STRI?s director of operations, Richard Hayden, said: ?The Aviva Stadium is an amazing new stadium and as an Irishman I am extremely proud to have been part of its creation. It is of paramount importance that the pitch design is given the attention it deserves, and STRI has tailored the design and specification of the pitch, incorporating the fibre elastic reinforced rootzone, to the specific requirements of the Aviva Stadium. Particular focus was paid to the installation, performance testing and the ongoing maintenance of the pitch to ensure continued quality and playability.?
