We had a very disturbing incident last night. My girlfriend lives in Scottsdale and I live in New York. She is a very pretty 27 year old former model and she lives by herself. Last night at 1:30am she received a phone call from a complete stranger who said "A pretty girl like you shouldn't be living alone, someone could come get a pretty girl like you." She hung up immediately. Then he called back and said "A pretty girl like you could be in a lot of trouble living alone..." She hung up again and called the police. They said they couldn't do anything until she traced the call 3 times and then she could only file a report.

My woman is no victim, she went into her closet, loaded her .38 and called me to tell me what happened and woke me up at 4:30. Let me tell you how pissed off I am right now at this guy.

Well, this muthaf*ckin' genius didn't block his caller ID the second time he called. I guess he forgot. So we have his phone number. I had my girlfriend block her number and call the guy - she listened to his message and didn't recognize it. So I called and got the guy's name.

So now I have this guy's number and name. I want to call this guy and threaten him with everything in the book. But he obviously knows my girlfriend is alone and could do something really stupid if I threaten him.

Any thoughts? It's all I can do to not hunt this guy down, but since I live across the country.

I can't decide whether or not to leave this guy a message or wait until later in the morning and call him until he answers the phone. What would you all do? I'm so angry right now I'm not thinking straight.

I appreciate your help, fellas, I really do.

Bono,

I definitely would not try to push this guy's buttons cuz he might just be a loon. Since your girlfriend lives alone and you are 2500 miles away, you dont want to do anything that could put her at more risk. You have all the information the police would need. I would go back to the police with his name and number.

Taking the law into your own hands rarely works out for the best. I understand how you feel and if I were in your shoes I would want to hunt the guy down also, but I dont think it is in your girl's best interest to do that.

A couple of things your girl can do in the meantime though which will help. Try not to go anywhere alone at night...stay in well lighted places, etc .... all the obvious things for safely. On the less obvious side, she could alter a few habitual things which might help. Most people go to work and arrive home exactly the same time and travel exactly the same route....vary it slightly from day to day. It might cost you a few dollars, but you could also use the internet to find out alot of stuff about this guy without him knowing it. Best way to fight your enemy is to know your enemy.

Other than that, just have her be extra careful for awhile and avoid dark places like parking garages...and leave alot of lights on around her house for when she comes home at night.

Hope everything works out and this guy just turns out to be a bored teenager with nothing better to do. Just be careful.

Dont know if I would carry around a gun but there are things she could carry which would help in a time of crisis....mace, pepperspray, things like that.

Tell her to call the local TV station and newspaper and tell them that she has a creep threatening her on the phone, she has his phone number, and the police say they can't do anything about it. That should make a headline story and one of two things will happen; either the cops will get on this guy, or the creep will run for cover once exposed.

I agree with Skinar's suggestion...with an amendment.

1. Call the Mayor's Office in Scottsdale (The Mayor is in charge of the police.)

2. Tell the Mayor's Office what has happened and what kind of response you recieved from his police force.

3. Politely tell the Mayor's Office that if you don't recieve some IMMEDIATE help from the police, you are going to the local TV station (with this BREAKING news story).

Good idea Skinar.
Does this guy know that that you are miles away? Does your girl have friends or family nearby? I'm not sure what I'm gettin at, I'd be fuming too.
Since the idiot forgot to block his call ID, I'd phone him, call him by name and tell him you know who he is. If the thought of you knowing his identity doesn't back him off, then you've really got a problem.
Good luck

Being totally serious, I would contact a private investigator in your girlfriend's area. There are tons and tons of guys doing this kind of work. I would inform him to get as much information as he can about the individual. After you receive this information, then the next step will be much easier to make. The last thing in the world you want to do is piss the guy off. I would also tell your girlfriend to be extremely careful for the next few weeks and if she wants to go somewhere always take a friend along.

Bono,

one thought is to make sure (if possible) you have the right guy...You have the phone number of the house he called from...If your girlfriend recognizes the answering machine guy as the one who phoned, then that makes it a bit more certain. It would be two wrongs if you ended up nailing an innocent roommate or brother, etc.

I agree on the private detective angle also.

You have received some excellent advice. Ask any cop friends you have to check on the "right" private investigator for your girl's hometown or state. It would be worth the money to have him come in, check to verify you have the right guy - then pay him a vist. This should stop him in his tracks.

It is a shame the police will do nothing, but since they are aware you know who he is I'd be reluctant to have Fletch "and the boys"

do anything now for fear of trickle down effect. Been that route and you and others will end up being the defendents. However would have been perfect had you not notified police or anyone else previously and made damn sure you had the right person.

almost forgot. When might call this guy and without letting him know who is calling and leave simple message. "So you think stalking and harrassing women on the phone is cool? Think again. We'll be seeing you." Then hang up.Now he will have the fear he has been putting in others.

What can I say? I am totally overwhelmed by your support, fellas. Fletcher, you are definitely the man.

Here's what I did: I had Tera forward her phone line to my house last night so when he thought he was calling her it rang me in NY. This a-hole actually called again!! I answered the phone and he hung up. Then he called back and I answered again, but he was quiet but didn't hang up. I told him that he has made a serious mistake and he's screwing with the wrong people. He murmered something about that he must have the wrong number and hung up. He didn't call back.

To be on the safe side, Tera is going to stay with a friend over the weekend and have her forward her phone to me. She's pretty scared right now, but we think this guy is just screwing around because he never used her name or anything. We're both going home to LA for the 4th, so she won't be back in her apartment for 10 days. Hopefully this is just some pervert getting off by making random calls.

But I really appreciate all the responses and advice. I was a little out of my mind with anger yesterday and feeling incredibly helpless on the other side of the country.

We will both in Vegas for the Super Bowl -- Tera and I will definitely be buying drinks!!

Thanks again, fellas!! Hopefully this thing is over. But if not, Fletcher, my next call is to you!

you made the smart move fowarding the call to your house. You should start fowarding his calls to tibet and other foreign countries so if he continues to call cosistently his phone bill will be outrageous. As long as you have his name and phone number you've got the upper hand.
