Breakaleg, I have been suffering from gout for about five years now. I have it in an unusual spot which are my wrists. 95% of people have it from the knees down with most in feet, ankles or big toe. A couple of "home" remedies that I have found are celery for one, and the other and more recommended is cherries, or better, pure cherry juice. The worst thing you can do is drink alcohol, this is the worst cause of gout.

A good friend turned me on to a natural supplement called coral calcium. The Chinese for years have added calcium into the water system. Our water and diets here only give our body about 10-20% of the calcium our bodies need. If you think about it, you never hear about the the Orientals having gout/arthritis and supposedly this calcium thing has a lot to do with it.

There are some good web sites to check out, just plug gout in as your search and read up on foods to avoid. The main cause of gout is certain food types and alcohol. There are also some good testimonials to read about other peoples struggles with gout and things they have used to help

Brother I feel your pain and there is not much of a worse pain out there. Hope this gives you some help for relief.

As far as I know, there is no cure for gout. You can have symptomatic treatments for gouty attacks, and measures to increase the length of the symptom-free periods between attacks. Gouty arthritis is actually most prevalent in Pacific Islanders ie. Filipinos, Samoans, and it afflicts people of all races. 90% are men usually over 30 yrs old. Gout attacks can be a result of other diseases that you have that increases uric acid build up in your body, such as myeloproliferative, lymphoproliferative disease, cancer, psoriasis, kidney disease, starvation, diabetes, or very commonly drug induced such as thiazide or loop diuretics for high blood pressure. Alcohol binge is commonly associated with increased attacks so should be used wisely. A high liquid intake to help you urinate more than 2 liters a day or more will help in urate excretion and minimize the precipitation of the crystals. But once you have a gouty attack, no matter how much herbal meds, fluid you take, or food, the only thing that will help with the pain is NSAIDs like Ibuprofen, and Colchicine that can be prescribed by your doctor to shorten your attacks. Steroid injection can be used to your joint when you can't take NSAIDs for whatever reason. There are some other prescription meds such as Allopurinol, Probenecid, Sulfinpyrazone that you can take to help excrete uric acid thus decrease the frequency of the attacks, but many people don't like to be on meds chronically, and there're side effects that can be severe for some people, so definitely talk to your doc if you're interested. Bottom line is that it's another one of those diseases that is a pain in the ass but not life threatening. Hope this helps.:)

Forgot to mention that foods high in purine (meat extracts, sweetbreads, sardines, anchovies, kidney, liver....) have been linked but studies have shown they contribute very little to the causation of the disease.
