Here`s the deal, I have a old nano 2nd generation that also has a broken screen. It`s not worth $10 . But I can still listen to the songs,

Here`s the problem,I`m trying to get the tracks off there safely. Those tracks that are laid down me and my friends years ago and would to save them. Would love to share with friends but hate to think I would lose them. As I'm the only one that still has these tracks.

So what I`m asking is I`f I hook this Ipod up to itunes what are the chances of loosing all the tracks on it?

iTunes is the database that supports the device. You either have the stuff in your iTunes account or you don't have access to them. If you sync up, I think they are going to disappear.....unless you have them in your iTunes database.

If you can open it without iTunes you can also transfer it to a USB stick. I transfer music all over the place on my computer, USB stick, and my iPhone. Good Luck- Hopefully you don't lose them.

when i hook up my ipod to my itunes, --after it is recognized, itunes tells me, "there are songs present on your ipod that do not appear in your itunes library - would you like to add /copy them to your itunes library?"

if you were to get this same prompt, then you would be good to go as far as getting access to files from ipod, to be able to save.

to try and get that option to appear on your itunes, i would go into the preferences options within itunes itself BEORE you link the ipod

look for an option under DEVICES PREFERENCES that should appear as a checkbox that reads something to say "prevent ipods, iphones, and ipads from syncing automatically" and check that box and save settings (reopen window to make sure box appears checked before you link ipod to

-THEN link ipod and whence you go to sync music by choosing option to select music manually, you should get the "add songs not found to library" option

all depending on which version of itunes you're using

hope this helps

let us know how turns out

i'm still in the process of whittling it down (have been for last 2 months) though essentially took music libraries from handful of friends and all the IT guys in my company (one of'm had something like one thousand depeche mode songs -i would guess everyuthing they ever released, and then some)

have i listened to it all, not even cloise, and would venture at least half the music there that i dont even want, though compiling all the music, to have and get exposed to, hear was the idea
but yes, theres a lot, not a typo -- many duplicates though

I may just try this route. Got the box checked and saved settings. The version currently using is itunes10 should I upgrade to 11.0?

Thanks for all the help :0074

i dont like the upgrades in itunes as after a certain version ( 8 or 9 i think) the gracenote song retrieval hasnt worked for me, on mine -- its the site that itunes looks at to read song info on discs (in order to copy them into yor library), and for whatever reason the newer versions dont work -- least for me

i would hold off on upgrading until you figure your library issues (see if songs are there)

whatshisnuts was right, in that all of your music that is on ipod, originally hadto come from a source you linked from (if it is itunes, then you probably already have songs there, in whatever format mp3, wav etc) that you have access to all songs already -- its just a matter of loctaing

the library itself pulls from one specific location, that you can see if you right click on a song and choose song datails. there you should see a file path to where itunes keeps all your songs -- that you might have all the music there already -- unless you synced from a different computer / library

in either case - you do have options --t

These songs that are on my ipod were put on there years ago. With a pc that has long ago hit the dumpster. So if its a matter of locating on this pc it not going to happen.

I don`t mind clearing everything on itunes if theres a chance to save what`s on my ipod. But if I chance sync this ipod to Itunes and lose it all then I`ll have to pass.

so long as you have auto sync set to off, itunes wont make changes to ipod until you say so
so, from what i gather the first option should be the best one for you -- seeing as cant get back to orig library (old comp)

you should be good to go - best of luck
