First of all, thanks to Jack for letting me into this forum. I have a medical question to ask concerning the thyroid. My doctor told me he was 99% sure that it will have to be removed. I may have an option to stop taking ameoderone, the cause of my problem, but that takes about 6 months to be helpful and the consequences of not taking the drug may be too severe to save the thyroid anyway. My question is this: What may I expect my life to be like without a thyroid? I would like your opinions because the doctors have not told me the entire truth in other physical problems I have had. If anyone has any websites that will help me find information it would be gratefully accepted. Thank you for your time.

Ummmm... Visionary,

It happens almost daily on this forum. Why would this particular post be so surprising?

BTW- I agree with you.

Powder,

Since I flunked out of premed to avoid Viet Nam, here's a layman's opinion. I would bet on its accuracy but consult a doctor that successfully avoided the Selective Service System.

If throid is removed:

#1 You'll be on synthroid for the rest of your life. No biggie. Pop a pill daily.

#2 You'll need plenty of exercise or become another "Fridge"

#3 Very hard to cope with extreme weather. Hot or cold.

#4 Hair might thin and skin might become dry.

Caution: Take the thyroid replacement synthroid or levroxin(not sure of spelling) faithfully. If not.......serious heart probs.

You can lead a healthy normal life sans thyroid.

Visionary, I'm sorry if my post offended you but I saw how they handled Fletch's questions and took a shot. I only asked how it would affect me, not whether I should do it. btw, I love the style of your posts. Very entertaining. Ronbets, thanks for the info. I already have heart problems(hence the ameoderone) and will talk to my cardiologist soon. All I wanted was a taste of what to expect and did not wish to step on any toes. Thank you
