GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida guard Brett Nelson had surgery on his right cheekbone after fracturing it during practice, an injury that isn't expected to keep him out of Friday's first-round NCAA Tournament game against Creighton in the Midwest Regional.
Coach Billy Donovan said the injury occurred Tuesday night, and Nelson had surgery a few hours later.
"We anticipate him coming to practice today, Thursday and playing Friday," Donovan said.
"Brett suffered a small fracture on his cheekbone in practice Tuesday," said Dr. Nicholas Cassisi. "The surgery reduced the fracture and he could be in a position to play on Friday."
Donovan didn't know if Nelson would have to play with a protective shield for his face.
Nelson is Florida's third-leading scorer with 14.7 points a game. He has set Florida's single-season record with 96 3-pointers this year, but has struggled shooting, making just 40 percent of his shots.
