"West Coast Seattle Boy"...stupid title but so was "Revelations"...nevermind that

Pretty cool, I'd say. Only heard about 20 of the 59 track available--many first releases (shock and horror) and some others re-mixes from original master tapes. Several good instrumentals on the discs and disc 1 has a lot of session work that he did that I'd never heard before (with Isley Brotehrs and others).

Likely $60-$80 bucks (is actually 5 discs with some documentary as #5) but you can bust the (other) man here:

Very good quality, from the 1/3rd I've heard.
(high variable bitrate)
I see a (looks like) 320 now available (same site--search Hendrix West Coast and voila) but wasn't there when I scored this morn...can't vouch for quality but mine was 363 megs (59 tunes+etc) while the other is 600 megs...it will be what it is what is was.

Some other cool shiite since from the past 9 days (new comp...gotta put it to the test):

Red Sparowes: heavy instrumental rock from some Isis dudes and others; pretty cool and if you like Tool-type stuff (like myself) then you should get off.

Grails: some more totally cool instrumental stuff. Supposedly "post-rock" or "post-metal" or some lame-ass label like that. (everybodys' talkin' 'bout the new sound--funny--but it's still rock n' roll to me) Burning Off Impurites disc is a good place to start.

Mastadon: some more heavy shiite; pretty cool, at least the instrumental disc (disc 2) from the recent Crack the Skye.

Michael Lee Firkins: a solid guitarist I hadn't gotten into before. Some good stuff--heavy to bluesy--but still can't touch my Bucket. Any seems worthwhile.

If you love guitar (like whats-'is-face) then worthwhile is also Al di Meola, Paul Gilbert, Gary Hoey, Greg Howe and Allan Holdsworth. Vernon Reid (played with some Masque) band, whoever the hell they are...totally instrumental and some very original work by Reid, closest reminiscence to Buck-ing the trend (scored Known Unknown and Other True Self, though I can't find the older Mistaken Identity)...he was apparently with Living Colour, but no one's perfect.

Baroness, Blue Record, sounds okay from what I've heard. Alternative metal.

Finally scored Axiom Funk's Funkcronomicon...some of Eddie Hazel's last work (a la Funkadelic esp.Maggot Brain fame). Jazz-rock and some stellar at that.

Riverside is also some cool alternative metal but try Pelican first, if you're into that stuff.

Scored some stuff by The Move...first time for everything. Late-60's band which someone made the mistake of comparing to Pink Floyd...I don't think so...more like the Byrds, just not as good, IMO.

A couple of new "supergroups" have sprung up and I've heard a couple of the discs:
Black Country Communion features Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, some Deep Purple, disc with Iommi, etc) and Joe Bonamassa; I was expecting great things but was disappointed on first listen. Hughes doesn't do it for me (though I have a buddy who swears by him) and Joe's work is totally not the best of his repertoire.
Them Crooked Vultures, while not essential, was much preferred by who's truly. Some Dream Theater dude, Josh Homme on guitar and vocals (Kyuss/Queens of the Sone Age) and some John Paul Jones mofo...apparently from some obscure British band out of the late 60's and into the 70's.:mj03: :142slap:

Also checked out Santana's Caravanaserai...a totally instrumental disc and a sweet, bluesy one at that. Totally cool.

Transatlantic is another alternative metal band that seems pretty cool from what I've heard.

This Will Destroy You (Texas) and Do Make Say Think (Toronto, aye) are a couple more good instrumental outfits...seem to coming out of the woodwork the past decade or so...Mogwai, Tortoise, Labradford, Godspeed You Black Emperor, ad absurdium appear to have started a trend that (thank Hendrix) will not die...I'm totally loving the instrumental rock, always have.

A freakin' ton of others I haven't quite heard yet (Bozzio Levin Stevens, Explorers Club, Fatso Jetson, Goblin Cock :)mj07: ), Mono, Old Man Gloom, Slint, Torche, schlameezel, schlamazel, e.g.) so can't quite comment further. Jeez, I love chekin' out new (to me) rock tunes...always gems to be found in there somewhere.

Oh yeah, new Buckethead (Captain EO...not sure why the fascination with MJ (not hoops)) but the disc is pretty cool...some more mellower stuff similar to the recent A Real Diamond in the Rough or Shadows Between the Sky...if you like instrumental stuff and prefer rock (or blues-rock) then check him out and pray for rain.

Signing off until next spring training (+513) or sooner (-666),
