From the photos it appears the floor/field is made of CONCRETE!

Is this normal?

Do they pave the floor with concrete and then lay grass over the top if it?

I'm sure in the old stadiums like Soldier Field, Candletick Park, San Diego Stadium, etc. have real dirt underneath and the grass has been there for decades.

I don't understand how if you place grass over rock-solid concrete it's any safer or softer than artificial turf.

Any thoughts?

I think from reading about CMGI field being built that this is first done to lay down the drainage/heating/piping for the field. Irrigation and heating systems are laid on top of the cement "floor", then dirt or a close cousin of dirt is laid down on top of that. Sod on top of that.

Its softer because its still real grass, on top of say two or three feet of soft dirt. Would guess that there is virtually no difference than being directly on top of dirt, but a far cry from turf.

Dont quote me on this, but I think it is something along those lines.
