The Minnesota Vikings will hire Mike Zimmer as their head coach, a league source told ESPN.

Zimmer, who has spent the last five seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals' defensive coordinator, and the Vikings had been in negotiations in an effort to complete a deal Wednesday, according to league sources.

Zimmer remained overnight after his second interview Tuesday was finished, with Vikings owner Zygi Wilf more centrally involved in the session, sources told ESPN.

Wilf himself has made calls to selective references on Zimmer and has come away satisfied to give a green light on hiring the defensive coordinator to succeed Leslie Frazier as Minnesota's next coach.

Parameters on a contract were in place, but negotiations between the Vikings and Zimmer's agent, Marvin Demoff, gained momentum toward completion, league sources told ESPN

I would would give Zimm a shot before I'd give a 2nd look at Jim Caldwell for sure. Zimm has a great resume, great in that he once worked for the Cowboys. Those former Cowboys coaches who moved on after Jerry Jones either didn't rehire them or they left his sorry ass, have done purdy good!!

Zimm has good lineage as well and a straight forward approach and he'll hire a good OC and QB coach. I think if they can get into the head of Josh Freeman, (Snyder will consult), they will do well in 2014. Maybe not 9 wins straight off, but better than they did in 2013.

Good stuff maynard!!

Great hire by the Vikings, although I might be a little biased (we were teammates and graduated high school togther). One thing he will bring is a tough, no nonsense attitude to the Vikes, which they probably could use. Guarenteed his guys will play hard or be gone. Give him a couple of years to add some talent, and they will be right there.
