my cardinal rule:
if i don't know the sender, it is deleted. even if i know the sender, when i see a forwarded attachment, i won't open it, even if it has to do with mother teresa's lifetime accomplishments. sorry, pals.
also, there is another virus trick i have seen:
you get a normal business letter with an attachment, and then a second letter with a like subject, also with an attachment, but with the virus.
example:
last month's report pepin46
other late info (virus) pepin46
so basically, the sender is duplicated for the explicit purpose of attaching the virus, and with a very legit sounding subject. weird? it has happened. i noticed because an email address i barely use, where i received copies of everything, kept getting all the legit messages and always the second (virus) message right after. this originated in one place of business only(sender), not on all messages i received.
eudora 5 (free) is pretty good with it, as it will show you "hot peppers" if it thinks it may be a virus, before you open it.
also, another thing we have learned is to use only one computer, not in a network, to open up email, this way we won't allow it to spread. but i think the coolest of all is to use windows 3.1 (16 bit)to received and open email, as all viruses are designed for 32 bit systems. of course, you may need to dig up some old aol, email software, etc., but it may very well be worth it.
