New Year?s Day Numbers

By SPORTSBETTING.COM

The NCAA Bowl season is in full swing, with a full week of games already in the books. The real heart of the bowl schedule arrives this week, highlighted by a New Year?s day bowl-fest. While January 1st doesn?t quite hold the same cache as it used to in terms of being THE defacto can?t miss ?bowl day??it still remains one of the best football days of the year.

This week we focus in on New Year?s Day action, looking at who the bettors are backing and a few trends worth noting.

Tuesday, Jan. 1

Cotton Bowl
11:30 a.m., FOX
Arkansas vs. Missouri
SPORTSBETTING.COM Line: Missouri -3 (Over/Under 69)

The early betting action for this Dallas-based bowl game has leaned to Missouri at a 60% clip.

Numbers of Note: It is interesting to see 80% of the Over/Under action in this one going to the ?Under?, as it aligns with the past results for this bowl matchup. The Cotton Bowl has been an ?Unders? paradise for more than a decade. Ten of the last 12 times the Cotton Bowl has been played, the Under bettors have cashed a ticket.

Capital One Bowl
1 p.m., ABC
Michigan vs. Florida
SPORTSBETTING.COM Line: Florida -10.5 (Over/Under 59)

The betting public has been all over the Florida Gators in this matchup, with SPORTSBETTING.COM players wagering on the Gator side at a 90% clip.

Numbers of Note: Michigan is only 1-5 straight up in their last six bowl games (the one win was vs. Florida in the 2002 season), going 2-4 ATS in those games. The moneyline on Florida in this tilt is a steep -450.

Gator Bowl
1 p.m., CBS
Virginia vs. Texas Tech
SPORTSBETTING.COM Line: Texas Tech -6 (Over/Under 59)

Texas Tech is receiving 62% of the early betting action, but the Over/Under wagering has been very lopsided, with bettors loving the ?Over?, hitting it at a clip of 95%.

Numbers of Note: When Georgia Tech covered vs. West Virginia as an underdog last season, it was the first time in 10 years that the favorite didn?t score an ATS win. The favorite is now 9-1 against the spread the last 10 years in the Gator Bowl.

Rose Bowl
5 p.m., ABC
USC vs. Illinois
SPORTSBETTING.COM Line: USC -13.5 (Over/Under 50)

It?s all SoCal and the ?Over? in this one. Bettors like the Trojans to the tune of 80% of all volume bet on the matchup?and the Over? 50 is seeing 90% action.

Numbers of Note: Southern California has a record of 4-1 against the spread the last five years in their bowl games. Only once in the last five years have they combined to score less than 50 points in a bowl game (although they landed right on 50 in 2003).

Sugar Bowl
8:30 p.m., FOX
Hawaii vs. Georgia
SPORTSBETTING.COM Line: Georgia -7.5 (Over/Under 69)

The underdog Warriors are grabbing the bettors? interest in this tilt, as Hawaii is seeing 60% of the betting action. The ?Under? 69 is the popular choice for the total, as 75% of bettors are hoping for this one not to hit the 70-point mark.

Number of Note: In the last 10 years, Georgia has only been involved in one bowl game in which the final score went over 69 points (the Sugar Bowl two seasons ago, where they lost 38-35 to West Virginia).

Good luck on the games.
