I have seen Tiger quoted as low as 1/2 which frankly is ridiculous - if he gets the notorious winds at the wrong time he could get blown away, I personally cannot understand why Sporting Odds quote Turner at 50/1 - maybe I am missing something!
One from Clive is Tait - 6th and 3rd on this course in the past 150/1 from Sporting Odds is a bit of a joke and probably will not last

Where are all the Kiwis when you need them??!
Tait now 80.
Gone for Rumford (played ok here before, in good form)33/1
Paddison 66/1 at Coral...they obviously don't believe the hype

I am heading to course tomorrow to watch the pro-am so will let you all know about how windy it was (and probably will be). Of course Tigers caddy is from Paraparaumu (where they are playing ) so he will have a lot of local knowledge of the course and wind factors
Myself I will have a small wager on Turner.

Outright plays

Outright plays

Craig Parry 25/1 e.w. @ Ladbrokes [5 places option] (0.5 units)
Small and stocky, Parry should be the perfect links player and he is. He is also back in form after a very disappointing 2001 season. He finished 7th in the Invensys Classic in October to end a run of four missed cuts and then finished 3rd and 9th in the Australian PGA Championship and Australian Open at the end of last year. Should contend for a place finish and it is no certainty that Tiger will win, particularly if the wind blows.

Greg Turner 40/1 e.w. @ Sporting Odds (0.5 units)
Another reason why Tiger may not win is that the home players have a stranglehold on this championship, so there should be at least one Kiwi selection. In the last five years, Turner has played in his national championship four times, winning once and never finishing out of the top-10 - and on two of those occasions this event was played at Paraparaumu Beach. Another good links player who should contend.

Craig Perks 50/1 e.w. @ Sporting Odds (0.5 units)
A less familiar home player is Perks who has struggled to make an impact on the PGA Tour. However he did finish 2nd in the Honda Classic last year and 6th in the NCR Classic two months ago. Perks left New Zealand at 18 to play college golf and has only ever played once Australasian Tour event, the 2000 New Zealand Open on this course. On that occasion he lost in a playoff to Michael Campbell. That's impressive enough to gain the 3rd selection spot.

Intersting day today wet and windy, Tiger shot 65 (6 under par).
The weather forecast is for more wind and rain for the 1st round.
Hope this is some help.

72-hole plays

72-hole plays

Marcus Cain to beat Gareth Paddison +135 @ Camelot
Very attractive price to back Cain who won the 1999 ANZ Tour Championship, finished in the top-20 in the Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship at the end of last year and was 15th two years ago on this course. Much is expected of the young Paddison, particularly following his 3rd place finish in the Australian PGA Championship, but this is only his 7th Tour start, he has failed to really impress on the other occasions and this is an attractive price.

Craig Parry to beat Peter O'Malley -125 @ Centrebet (0.5 units)
O'Malley may have good form on this course (2nd in 1996, 11th in 2000), these are two players who finished the 2001 season in opposing fashion. O'Malley had a stellar season in Europe, winning the English Open, but he finished 58th in the limited field Volvo Masters and then missed the cut in both the Australasian Tour events. Parry, by contrast, had a poor season, but closed the season with 7th in the Invensys Classic and top-10 in both the Australasian Tour events.

Craig Perks to beat Peter O'Malley +125 @ Camelot
Opposing O'Malley at a good price with another of the outright selections. Like Parry, Perks had an indifferent season, but ended it with a top-10 in the NCR Classic. And he did play rather well the last time he was at Paraparaumu Beach.

Well both Turner and Tait missed the cut and I was going to have no further interest but I have been tempted by the 50/1 on offer from BlueSquare regarding Wayne Smith who was 4th here in 99 and played the best yesterday in the worst of the weather

Aussie abroad
all set for a cracking final day... Tiger in touch with the lead, but most of the guys ahead still have a few holes to play in R3 and may stretch the gap a bit. Campbell right on their heels too....

I like Alker myself.

Not sure how many places will go up with updated markets since the round is incomplete, but NZTab, SportsTAB and Tattsbet are all up.

Boris,
Best price I have seen so far on your Alker is 11/2 1/4 odds first 3 at www.tote.co.uk (Though not many quoting)

These later holes must be difficult. I notice Alker is +1 on the tournament so far on the holes he still has to play for round 3 and more worryingly Leaney is +2 (no birdies) for his
:(

Update.... 3rd completed
Leaney -10 (never doubted him!)
Alker -9
Parry -8
Campbell -8

Quite a finish

Quite a finish

My sympathies to Campbell backers - the 3 putt from 8 feet at 17 was inexcusable.

That out of the way, thanks for the winner Stanley. Good start to 2002.

Nice call Stanley.
(Only slightly grudgingly after well into Leaney e/w)

Any tips for next year's event yet?

Be sure to remind us when you do post the tips next year, that you have picked the last 2 winners..... I believe in lucky events!
:)

Stan - ever realise how hard it is to get a bet on from the holiday outcrop of Waihi Beach?

But I knew it would be worth my while - I owe one of the locals a slice of my winnings :)

Knew I couldn't let a holiday get in the way of another NZ Open winner - back to work today with a smile on my face

Cheers my friend
