The NCAA crowned a champ last night, congrats go out to the Florida Gators, but even bigger congrats go out to bettors. From the day this game went up on the board bettors liked the Gators and pounded away at them, moving the line from -3 all the way up to -6 at many places. There was late money showing up on Oklahoma once it hit 5.5 and 6, but not enough to score a big win for bettors when they won 24-14 covering the number.
So bettors head into the weekend NFL action off a convincing win.
After a week of rest, the Tennessees and New Yorks of the NFL will finally see action. As opposed to the Wild-Card round, where all the road team were favored, this weekend, as you might expect, the home teams are where the chalk can be found.
Let?s have a look at the matchups:
Saturday, January 10, 2009
Baltimore Ravens at Tennessee Titans
Line: Titans -3
Over/Under: 35
With the second and third best defenses, in terms of fewest points allowed, in the entire NFL respectively, a low total has been hung on this one at 35 points. And history backs the low number and the ?Under? bettors.
In the last 15 matchups between the two, the Under has been the dominant Total play cashing in 11 times as opposed to the Over, which has done so only four times (4-11).
In Baltimore?s last 13 trips to Tennessee, the Under has prevailed eight times and the Over only five (5-8).
In the Titans? last five games when they were favored by 4-points or less, they have played five straight Unders.
So all indications point to a possible under play, with the exception of this one: in the Ravens? last ten games as an underdog of 4-points or less, they have posted 7 Overs and 3 Unders.
The betting volume is reflecting the trends, as SPORTSBETTING.com is reporting close to 65% of the Total action coming in on the Under.
As for the side, the Ravens sport a 6-2 ATS mark in their last eight trips to Tennessee.
This has been the most evenly split game of the weekend in terms of where the money is moving. There are reasons to like both sides and that has resulted in a slim 54% lean to the home side Titans.
Arizona Cardinals at Carolina Panthers
Line: Panthers -9.5
Over/Under: 49
Arizona hasn?t done well against Carolina dropping its last five games straight up while going 2-3 ATS.
How have the Cardinals done as a big dog? Pretty good actually, boasting a 5-1 ATS mark the last six times they?ve been underdogs of more than 8-points.
In eight games where favored by more than 8, the Panthers are 5-2-1 ATS, with 2 Overs and 6 Unders in that stretch.
Where?s the money going? Bettors aren?t giving Arizona any respect; or chance in this tilt. Home favorite Carolina is seeing 80% of the betting action while the Over is receiving 70%.

Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants
Line: New York -4
Over/Under: 40.5
The Giants truly begin defense of their Super Bowl title this weekend, facing a bitter old foe and division rival.
The G-Men have been a bettor?s dream in the month of January going 14-6 ATS in the last 20 and going 9-4 ATS in the last 13 home games in January as well. Pretty impressive numbers.
Philly is slightly profitable at 11-9 ATS in the month of January but a road warrior against the spread going 7-3 ATS in its last 10 away games in the first month of the year.
This should be a great battle and one I?m particularly looking forward to watching. The defending champs are seeing 65% of the betting action.
The Eagles looked good last week on the road, but this is a much stiffer challenge than facing the Vikings.
San Diego Chargers at Pittsburgh Steelers
Line: Steelers: -5.5
Over/Under: 38
Like the Ravens-Titans game, many are predicting that the scoreboard won?t be lit up in this one, as the ?Under? bet has been popular all week (SPORTSBETTING.com is reporting 68% of the action on the Under).
During the regular season, Pittsburgh led the league in fewest yards allowed per game (237.2) and fewest points allowed per game (13.9 ppg).
But before you jump all over the Under, here?s an interesting note: Pittsburgh hasn?t gone Under at home in January dating back to 1998, posting 10 Overs and no Unders in that span.
Pittsburgh Stealer QB Ben Roethlisberger sustained a concussion in the team?s final game of the regular season but with a week of rest during the bye he appears okay as he did practice all week. However, playing in front of an awful O-line, he is vulnerable.
The story isn?t as good for San Diego?s all-world RB LaDainian Tomlinson, who is suffering from a groin injury.
Unlike Big Ben, the Chargers didn?t have a bye and LT even told the AP that he was doubtful for this Sunday?s game.
This line has moved down a little, as bettors aren?t comfortable with the laying this many points on this Stealer team. The Chargers are seeing 58% of the action heading into the weekend.
The Under is seeing 60% of the volume.
Can Big Ben stay healthy and up-right all game? Can the Charger offense move the ball on the Stealer?s dominating D? Those are the big questions.
Enjoy another Saturday and Sunday of NFL playoff action. Good luck.
