Despite staying in the playoff hunt until the final week last season, the Bills jettisoned veteran Drew Bledsoe in favor of second-year passer J.P. Losman, who has just five career attempts. Now everyone has high hopes at the beginning of preseason but with the Bills it?s more like ?watch out her we come?. We checked on Losman's progress in his visit to Bills camp, where the 2004 first-rounder works to get a handle on the offense. With Losman learning his way they could be off to a slower start than even they expect.
These Bills without Bledsoe are not as good as they were at the end of last season. WE think they made a vital error in letting Bledsoe go. What would happen if Losman peters out early? Big risk but they are willing to take it. If Losman delivers the Bills will be there this year and we see them winning 9 games on the year and a wild-card birth in the playoffs. The Bills are about to repeat what the Cincinnati Bengals did last year when they turned over the reins to Carson Palmer and never looked back. The Bills had a winning record last year, a top-flight defense, an emerging star at running back and terrific special teams, which makes the Buffalo situation slightly better than Cincinnati's, but can Losman do what Palmer did by matching the team record from the year before?
Well don't bet against Drew Brees.
This guy is a toughie considering he has only been in the NFL for 5 years. San Diego quarterback Drew Brees disclosed Friday that he separated his left shoulder in the fourth game last season and played the rest of the year with the injury. He said he had arthroscopic surgery in the offseason to repair the problem. Despite the injury to his non-throwing shoulder, Brees had his best season, throwing for 27 touchdowns with just seven interceptions. He made the Pro Bowl and it stands to reason that with a healthy shoulder and a better receiving unit, he can duplicate those numbers. He'll need TE Antonio Gates to get into camp though for his best chances. It doesn?t look like Rivers is not taking to water like his namesake says. Brees is a fulltime QB anywhere in the NFL and if uninjured he could turn into a premier QB.
Chargers like Philip Rivers a great deal but he may not be able to handle the riggers of the NFL for another 2 years. One year after he seemed destined for the discard pile, Brees is running the San Diego Chargers' first-team offense, aiming tightly-wound spirals at rookie wide receiver Vincent Jackson, running through a string of post-practice interviews and keeping backup Philip Rivers; last year's No. 1 draft choice off the field.
The only way Drew is going to keep Rivers at bay is do a great job. Want something to look for in preseason? Look no further, watch the Chargers run through preseason with a vengeance. Where there are QB issues is where you may want to lay a little wood. We never suggest piling on a practice game because it is meaningless.
Another QB that scenario.
Payton?s brother. Eli Manning at NY is going to be expected to start performing at least in shades of his masterful brother. Can he? We think he still looks and smells like a real rookie. Last year was a disaster. Some will point back to last year's draft when the Giants traded away this year's first-round pick for Eli Manning. But guess what? It was the right thing to do. Let?s just hope he matures in time like Payton. He had some lean years at the start.
What the overriding question in western New York. Mularkey isn't asking his young quarterback to win games as a first-year starter, but he is asking him to manage the game intelligently, protect the ball and minimize mental errors. General manager Tom Donahoe pointed out that Losman has been in the facility watching tape, being tutored by quarterbacks' coach Sam Wyche and hitting the weights since February. Donahoe also pointed out that Losman hasn't thrown an interception in the first five days of practice. It is what Buffalo?s future is riding on. Can he do it? We hope so but do any 1st year rookies really blow the doors off anyone?s house?
Most scouts thought Notre Dame defensive end Justin Tuck might go in the first round, but the Giants got him in the third. Here is another example of what to look for in preseason. The teams that acquired hot prospects and any team that has QB serious competition.
Keep in mind these games are for practice and get the juices flowing again. We do not suggest you play any team hard. Ain?t worth it. When every sports advisor on earth calls you and say they went 12-2 last preseason ask them for a photocopy of their fairy tale. Remember go easy and concentrate on teams that have something to prove such as veteran QBs vs. rookie QBs.
