NFL Season Win Totals

By SPORTSBETTING.COM

If you?re an NFL player, a long offseason is good for what ails you, as you let your body heal from the beating pro football players absorb. The same can sometimes be said for sports bettors, as the off-season allows you to prepare for the battle of making a profit in the upcoming football season. That preparation could entail studying the teams, studying additional handicapping techniques, building your bankroll and committing to being more disciplined?all good things to do.

This preparation can also mean looking at the early NFL wagering options to spot a few future wagers that could pay off nicely next winter.

This is the time of the year to look for edges in the NFL numbers. One of the best spring wagering options for NFL bettors can be found in the ?Season Win Total? numbers. SPORTSBETTING.COM has posted their ?Season Win Total? numbers for the 2008 campaign. Over the next few weeks we?ll look at most of the teams, today we start with the best and the worst.

New England Patriots? Over/Under 12 Wins

The Patriots surprising loss in last season?s Super Bowl cast a pall over the team in their final days, and that ?dark? period has continued on into the off-season, largely related to the ?Spygate? scandal. That said, they might have finally moved past that circus, as it turned out to be a ?much ado about nothing? scenario when Commissioner Goodell addressed it again the other day.

Despite being upset in the Super Bowl and dealing with all the ?cheating? allegations, let?s not forget this remains an incredibly impressive team, who will again benefit from playing in the AFC East.

The Pats? divisional rivals amassed a dismal combined record of 12-36 in 2007. New England has had a relatively easy time of it, as they have won 17 of their last 20 meetings with AFC East opponents, racking up a 13-7 ATS mark in that stretch.

Also on the Pats? sked is the obligatory matchup against Peyton Manning and the Colts.

While Pats QB Tom Brady used to have his way with his counterpart in Indianapolis, the Colts have gained the upper hand the last few years beating the Pats straight up in three out of four and delivering a 4-0 ATS mark in those games.

Based on last year?s standings, the tough weeks on the Pat schedule will be the aforementioned Colts, the San Diego Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Is a 13-3 season in the cards?it?s very conceivable, and 12 wins seems downright likely, which would mean a push on a ?Season Win Total? wager

Miami Dolphins ? Over/Under 5.5 Wins

Looking down, way down, we find the Miami Dolphins. Conventional wisdom says that at the very least, the Miami Dolphins should be able to improve on last year?s win total of one?and they will, book that in.

Miami now has a highly regarded big fish, or Tuna as it were running the show, and Bill Parcells has begun a renovation job in earnest, getting rid of mainstays such as Zach Thomas.

Parcells has a good resume (in his last NFL stint with Dallas, the Cowboys went from 5-11 to 10-6), but don?t expect the Dolphins to go from the worst franchise in the league to a playoff spot. Make no mistake, this team still has a lot of holes in the roster including at the QB position.

As it stands Josh McCown, John Beck and draft pick Chad Henne (if he signs in time) will comprise the QB crew for 2008; not a cast that inspires much confidence.

But their schedule could be the cure for some blues, as the only teams that were above .500 in 2007 are the Patriots, Seahawks and San Diego Chargers. Something to make note of while prepping for the upcoming season is that the Dolphins have competed well vs. the Pats in the past, sporting a 10-9-1 ATS against mark vs. them in the last 20 games.

Looking at the ATS mark vs. the other two teams, the Fish have cashed in four straight games ATS against both Seattle and San Diego. In straight up situations Miami has won six straight against the Chargers and three out of its last four against the Seahawks.

Looking down that schedule, the possibility of winning six games is there for them. They should at least split with Buffalo, and possibly with the Jets (although they are going to be better), Houston is a spot they could pick up a road win, and if they are going to take the step to be a better team, they have to beat a Raider team that is playing an early body-clock game on the East Coast and the same can be said for the 49?er game.

That gets this team into the five or six win range and they do have another road game, and home game or two that easily could fall their way.

They?ll be better, but six wins will be a big jump for them.
