Last few years one thing that has worked. Go against any new coach that is a fav. Don't have my stuff handy. But believe that is for first 5 weeks only, maybe 6. Around a 67% go against.

Don't have any exact numbers handy but I usually go against the Super Bowl champ the first 5 weeks of the season. Number is usually high - public all over the champs...They must be good - right?

One other thing first 4/5 weeks. Know who has new starting Q B. Even if old guy that changed teams. Watch out if fav. So above The Mugs said watch out those S B, winner first 4/5 weeks. Well they will have new starting Q B. And did you see that opening line 10.5. The public will take it higher. That hook that is on the 10 is big already.
Balt will have heavy lumber first few weeks.

my (humble) piece of advice:

stay away from game 1. it is a coin toss.

for games 2 and 3, look at prior year's performances and you will get a pretty good indication of which way to go. look for same key players, coaches, etc.

in a general sense, the dogs win these games/spreads; the have nots. the winners and confident teams have nothing to prove, especially away. at home, fans understand this and forgive, whereas in weak team cities, those pre-season home games are their best chances for wins, and usually owners/coaches will go all out to win and sell season tickets, with slogans like, this year it will be different, the year of the turnaround, how a new draft pick will take them to the playoffs, bs, bs, bs, etc.

some owners take some pretty clear positions, such as the minn owner, who wants to win from preseason, look for this type of statement, 'cause the coach has to follow orders.

in simple words: which team wants this particular game real bad? take that one, it usually works in pre-season.

game 4 is as close to the real thing as you will get.

in the meanwhile, get a lot of rest and a valium a day to check those anxiety attacks.
