NFL Week 16: Do or Die

By SPORTSBETTING.COM

If you watch NFL football on a regular basis, you?ll know that this is the time of the year where phrases, ?control their own destiny?, ?bound for the playoffs? and ?must win games? are used more often than Bill Parcells changes his mind.

As the sun sets on the 2007 NFL season some teams will head to the postseason and more will fall by the wayside.

For some, the playoffs begin now and like Izzy Mandelbaum (Lloyd Bridges) said in Seinfeld, ?It?s go time.?

The Cleveland Browns are pretty much the Rodney Dangerfield?s of the NFL, with all due respect to the late comic.

Their fans, who are amongst the most loyal in the NFL, saw their original team relocate to Baltimore and win a Super Bowl in 2000 while the expansion team that returned has only made one playoff appearance in eight years.

Going into this season, The Sporting News? Pro Football guide once again predicted futility for the Cleveland Browns forecasting a 3-13 finish.

But preseason prognostication doesn?t amount to squat and the 2007 Browns not only stand on the verge of making the playoffs, they could overtake the Pittsburgh Steelers for the AFC North division title.

This week the Browns travel to take on another AFC North city, Cincinnati and SPORTSBETTING.COM has Cleveland favored by a field goal. The early betting action is solidly in favor of the Browns, as they have received 70% of all the wagering volume.

Over in the NFC, while the New York Giants are still in position to make the playoffs, they took a major step back when they dropped last week?s contest to the Washington Redskins (and lost TE Jeremy Shockey with a fractured fibula as well).

If the Giants manage to pull off a win against the Buffalo Bills this week, or both the Redskins and the Saints lose or tie, the Giants are in the playoffs. They are a 3-point road favorite.

The betting public however, doesn?t seem overly confident in Eli Manning and company, especially considering Shockey?s absence, as only 52% of the bets are going New York?s way.

Over in Minnesota, despite having early troubles at the QB position (Tarvaris Jackson has thrown 10 picks to only 6 TDs), the Vikings are 4-1 ATS in their last five and 5-0 straight up in those games.

They have the league?s best rushing game, averaging close to 170 yards a start.
If the Vikes manage to rattle off their sixth straight win and the Saints lose, Minnesota will be playoff bound.

They host a desperate Washington Redskins team this week who need to run the table if they want to have a chance at the playoffs.

The Redskins have recovered slightly from a four game losing streak (1-3 ATS) earlier, taking two in a row both straight up and ATS.

SPORTSBETTING.COM has the home team listed at -6? with 60% of the betting public wagering on Minnesota to get the win and cover the number. This should be one of the better games on the weekend schedule.

A lot of teams are praying for the New Orleans Saints to lose this week, including the aforementioned Giants and Vikings.

The Saints currently stand at 7-7 and there is no margin of error, they have to win the rest of their games if they want to have any hope of making the postseason.

This week, New Orleans will host a Philly team that defeated the Dallas Cowboys last week.

The early betting activity on this NFC tilt has been pretty evenly split. While the Eagles are not in the playoff picture, last Sunday?s win over the much-hyped Cowboys has garnered them attention from sports bettors here. New Orleans? inconsistent play is another big factor?it?s simply been difficult to get a real read on this team all year.
The home side Saints have been given a small edge by the bettors at SPORTSBETTING.COM, as they are seeing 54% of the action.

The playoff race always makes for an exciting last couple of weeks of ball. Enjoy the drama and enjoy the holiday season.
