Nick Saban blasts Alabama defense after Arkansas rout
Gabrielle McMillen Omnisport
No.1 Alabama cruised to a 65-31 victory Saturday against Arkansas, but that wasn't enough for Nick Saban.
The Crimson Tide coach was unhappy with his team's defense, despite the team not trailing once during the game.
"I don't think that you really beat the other team when you give up 31 points, like we did today, at least on the defensive perspective," Saban said, via ESPN.
Arkansas' 31 points marks the most points an opponent has scored against Alabama since they lost 35-31 to Clemson in the College Football Playoff title game at the end of the 2016 season.
It almost marks the most points scored by an SEC opponent since Ole Miss barely lost to the Tide 48-43 in September 2016.
"We need to coach them better," Saban said. "We need to prepare them better. They need to be able to make adjustments in the game better. I just felt like we didn't do a good job of that. That's my fault. That's my responsibility. That's us as coaches. We've got to do a better job of coaching those guys, so that they do a better job when the game comes and make those adjustments they need to make."
It marks the 78th consecutive game Alabama has defeated an unranked opponent, even thought the 405 offensive yards were the most allowed by the Alabama defense all season.
It's the fifth game in a row Arkansas has lost, with their only victory under first-year coach Chad Morris coming in Week 1 over Eastern Illinois.
"You're not really competing against the other team," Saban said. "You're really competing against yourselves. Are you really playing as well as you're capable of playing and are you doing it on a consistent basis. We're obviously doing that better on offense than on defense.
"The good news is, everything that we're talking about is correctable."
The Tide will try to continue their perfect season next when when they host Missouri.
