Outright plays (total stake per play: 1pt)

Ernie Els to win 12/1 e.w. @ Boyle Sports [6 places]
Couldn't really split Els and Scott, so will back them both having seen Boyle Sports' offer of 6 places and top-price on both of them. Els would have been the one I left out as he would have had very little opportunity to practice given the wintry weather in London over the past week, but he reports on his website that he left for California a day or two earlier than usual to work on his game over there because of the weather back home. He also reports that because of the school half-term holidays, he will also have his wife and children with him this week and these things are very helpful to a player like Els. In terms of the course, he is a former winner (1999) and it is one of his favourites courses and in terms of his game, it has looked excellent since winning the South African Open in December apart from a blip early in his final round at Dubai. That cost us a winner that week with Els, but this looks a very good opportunity for him to make amends.

Adam Scott to win 12/1 e.w. @ Boyle Sports [6 places]
What is there to say about Scott and Riviera? In the Tour-Tips tables, he ranks 1st in current form, 1st in course form, 1st in location (California) form and 2nd in 1-year scoring average (behind Furyk). He has finished 2nd in his previous PGA Tour start this season and 1st and 2nd on this course over the last two years so the stats certainly suggest that he should be a strong contender this week and 12/1 is enough to tempt me.

Bart Bryant to win 80/1 e.w. @ Sportingbet, Sporting Odds and Victor Chandler
Last year was a poor year for Bryant and it is easy to see why: putting. He has never been a good putter; he has always been a 'fairways and greens' player, ranking in the top-20 in driving accuracy and greens in regulation every year since 2002 (bar an injury-ravaged 2003). But 175th in putting average and 187th in putts per round were not going to help him repeat his double-win of 2005. However, Riviera is a test of players' all-round games and putting will be of much smaller importance this week. Besides, he has shown with finishes of 13th, 7th and 4th in three of his four starts this year, that his overall game, including putting, is at a much higher level this year than last. With a decent showing on this course previously, I'll back to Bryant to beat a field of this quality as he did twice in 2005 at the Memorial Tournament and the Tour Championship.

Jeff Quinney to finish in the top-five 20/1 @ BetFred
Just can't back Quinney to win given the chances that he has spurned already this season, but it was still extremely surprising to see 100/1 on offer. This is a player who has finished 4th, 7th and 3rd in his last three events and that is not the form of a 100/1 shot. A player that ranks 4th in Scoring Average and 3rd in All-Around Ranking should also warrant shorter odds than 100/1, even though he does have a history of blowing leads in events. So the safer option of a place-only wager is the one advised here. And while admittedly he does not have any course form, his last five Tour starts in California has resulted in finishes of 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 4th and 7th. So surely 20/1 is good value and there is room for another Sunday wobble from Quinney.

Between Green Bay and Iowa City
Outrights:

My notes on this one going back several years are consistent and remind me: (1) Shotmakers that shape their tee shots and irons, and those with laser iron play, seem to thrive at Riviera and sing its praises; (2) Most everyone - the whole gamut from power hitters to short knocks - come to have a strong opinion about one of Hogan's Alleys, either one of affection (for the shot values and beautifully framed shots) or just not their bag; (3) Real scrambling after being out of position off the tee and on the wrong side of these small greens is no way to get it done; and (4) Form players coming in that look forward to their chances to return here are strong candidates for consideration, followed by veterans that might choose the moment to come to life . . . That's the way I'll be playing it - not a lot of surprises on my card - notwithstanding the short odds on Rollins and Bryant while butting heads with a stellar field.

Charles Howell(40/1) e.w
- - Ready to carry my cash again, if ready for nothing else.

Robert Allenby(40/1) e.w.
- - Back to my notes again, and it seems maybe he's best at Riviera in wet years, but I'm not limiting him in that fashion.

Bart Bryant(66/1) e.w
- - Bryant can make it look so simple, like it's supposed to look. Last week, playing great but fighting against missing really short putts you can't afford to miss, was like the anti-Bryant, IMO, in terms of making it look easy. We'll see how he responds this week to laying down those brain farts.

Corey Pavin(125/1) e.w.
- - When Pavin arrived at the Big Boys course at Kapulua, he was blunt in saying he wasn't there on holiday, he was there to win. It wasn't going to happen there, Corey, but I took notice, and was expecting something sooner rather than later. It's down the road to Riviera this week, and at least I know what he has on his mind . . . FWIW, the events surrounding Dick Harmon's sudden passing on 2/10/06 were associated with this event, and might bring some special meaning to those that were close to the man and his family. http://www.butchharmongolfschools.co...&sel=tourwatch

John Rollins(50/1) e.w.
- - Westchester, Sawgrass, Riviera, etc. are the types of demanding venues I associate with his style and strengths (and he seems to reappear at the same places), although he's better than that, and good enough to go well on any given week and (maybe) close it out on any given Sunday . . .

Scott, O'Hern, Mayfair, and Funk, formed the next tier of Savers only.

Matchups:

Rollins(+105) over Appleby (Tournament) @ thegreek

Howell(+105) over Garcia (Tournament) @ 5dimes
- - to InSpades

Pavin(-128) over Lehman (Tournament) @ 5dimes

From what I have read in this thread, this course favors accurate ball strikers who can put the ball on the green and get birdies (but then again what course doesn't?

Based on that fact I am making a small 3-ball play in the following group....

Nissan Open February 15 - 18, 2007 - Round 1 Matchups

Phil Mickelson +100
Ernie Els +125
Vaughn Taylor +455

Mickelson lit up the rest of the field at Pebble Beach last week, but it was his first good showing of the season. He has sputtered early, breaking 70 just once in four opening rounds thus far. In Phil's most recent showing here (2001) he failed to make the cut, firing an opening round 73 and following it up with a 76.

Els makes his 2007 debut here at Riviera and hopes to repeat his performance of 1999, when he won the tournament. While Ernie may be a contender come Sunday, it is difficult to gauge how he will perform today given his lack of practice due to inclement weather(as mentioned in a previous post). Last year he opened with a 70 and played just one round under 70 throughout the tournament.

Meanwhile, Taylor comes in with a little bit of buzz. He shot three 67's and a 70 last week to place 11th at the FBR Open. He has shot 9 of 11 rounds under par this year and rates very high in both accuracy and short game according to PGA Tour skill ratings (9 and 8 out of 10 respectively). He is currently 5th on tour in GIR, 2nd in birdie avg., and 5th in scoring avg. before the cut. Taylor has been hit or miss in the opening rounds this year, posting a 69, 75, and a 67 in three tournaments. He opens play with Mickelson and Els who should be more concerned about each other and allow him to just play his game. At 4.5/1 odds, I'll bite.

Vaughn Taylor +455
Risking 4 units to win 18.2

vaughn taylor is gay. i took Mickelson +115 and Els $120 here... tiny profit either way, big loss is Taylor does what he has no chance of doing. I think he deserves double (+910) in this 3-ball.

WSEX has Els @ $5 a share about 20/1
Think decent price considering Sky has him 14/1--anticipating selling half of shares if he gets to right price--kinda like creating an E/W with interactives.
