Senior Wide Receiver Harrison Hill Leaves The Kansas Football Team

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Senior wide receiver Harrison Hill has decided to forgo his senior season at the University of Kansas
due to heat related issues, KU officials announced on Sunday.

Herd Huddle

Cordell gone

Marshall opened training camp Saturday morning without sophomore defensive tackle Josh Cordell, who informed coaches Friday evening that he is giving up football.

"Josh decided to give up football for personal reasons," Marshall coach Bobby Pruett said. "It was not an easy decision for him, and we wish him nothing but the best in whatever he decides to do in the future."

Cordell, a native of Apple Grove, W.Va., was to have come into camp as the starter at nose tackle. He was a four-year letterwinner at Hannan High School.

Cordell, 6-foot-5 and 298 pounds, has back-to-back starts in 2001 against Northern Illinois and Buffalo. He recorded 58 tackles as a redshirt freshman, including 12 for loss. That tied him for second-best total on the team. His best game was against Ohio when he had 10 tackles.

Crimson Tide Starting Fullback Out for the Season

Donnie Lowe failed a physical and may be able to take a medical redshirt.

Aug 9, 2002

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama starting fullback Donnie Lowe, who has had three concussions since the beginning of the 2001 season, failed a physical and will not play this season, coach Dennis Franchione said Friday.

"The risk factor is too large" for him to play this year, Franchione said after the evening session on the team's first day of full-squad practice.

Franchione said Lowe, a junior, may be able to take a medical redshirt season.

On Thursday, senior offensive tackle Dante Ellington, who started three games in 2001, was declared academically ineligible. Ellington will stay in school and take a redshirt, hoping to return for a fifth season in 2003.

..If I can find any specific info on these guys I will post it here tonight. I do know the Kansas WR missed most of last year but was really supposed to bolster the KU WR corps and his loss will certainly be missed, despite the fact he did not play much last year.

thanks for the info, Chenker. I would think with all the injuires Florida St. suffered last year they will take their time with these dinged up players. That, and the fact Womble is suspended for this game, makes ISU at +22 looking good. But I will wait and hope the line goes toward 24 by gametime.

Ward runs out pattern
Running back Derrick Ward is academically ineligible for the season.

(Published Wednesday, August 14, 2002, 8:16 AM)

Fresno State running back Derrick Ward is academically ineligible and will not play for the Bulldogs this season, coach Pat Hill said Monday.
Ward failed a summer school biology class at Clovis Community College and fell short of making satisfactory progress toward his degree, team sources said. The Riverside native also was ineligible last season for similar reasons.

"He had opportunities to get it done, but right now he's ineligible and no longer on the team," Hill said. "It's really a shame. I feel badly about it, but I can't go into detail."

The news also wasn't good for two of Fresno State's projected starting defensive linemen.

Defensive end Brian Morris, attempting to come back from consecutive knee surgeries, suffered a setback in practice and will miss six to eight weeks, Hill said.

In addition, the sixth-year coach is concerned about the whereabouts of defensive tackle Clarence Denning. The Modesto native departed for Oklahoma City on Wednesday after learning his father was terminally ill, but Hill has not seen or heard from Denning since.

"We're a little worried about him, but the team's got to move on," Hill said. "Right now, unless Clarence returns to practice soon, we might not have him for the [Aug. 23 season opener at Wisconsin]."

Hill also said redshirt freshman Matt Rivera has moved ahead of Therrian Fontenot and Rodney Davis for the starting tailback spot.

Rivera, a walk-on from Clovis High, led the Bulldogs with 68 yards on six carries in Saturday's closed scrimmage, including a 40-yard touchdown. He also caught four passes for 46 yards.

Ward rushed for 49 yards on 18 attempts in the scrimmage, while Fontenot had nine carries for 40 yards.

Hill said the 5-foot-9, 193-pound Rivera would continue to work with the starting offense during practice alongside Fontenot and Davis. Redshirt freshman James Cummings is splitting time between fullback and tailback.

"It's all based on production," Hill said. "[Rivera] gains yards, he makes the blocks, he catches the ball, and he doesn't blow assignments. Right now, he's the most productive guy we've got back there."

While Rivera has opened eyes in training camp, the book on Ward appears finally closed.

The 5-10, 230-pounder has not made an official carry since the Bulldogs' 37-34 loss to Air Force in the 2000 Silicon Valley Classic.

Nevertheless, coaches, teammates and fans were optimistic Ward could recapture as a senior the flashy form he showed as a freshman, when he rushed for 875 yards and seven touchdowns.

Ward appeared confident as well, participating in summer workouts and telling reporters Aug. 1 at Fresno State's football media day the biology class would not be an issue.

"It's a challenge," Ward told The Bee, "but I'll get through it."

Ward did not return phone messages Monday.

Ward's teammates, some of whom privately grew weary of the running back's lack of commitment to the program, took the news in stride.

"Derrick's a good guy, but there are 104 other guys out here working hard every day doing what we have to do to get ready for Wisconsin," senior center Rodney Michael said.

...have a feeling the Wisky line will move up towards 10 by gametime. Even still I am not convinced the badger defense will be able to hold any big lead in this game and the loss of Lee Evans should be a factor. If I find any additional info I will post it here.

daboyz,

1st off I like your avatar ;). Did you see future hall of famer Roy Williams in his 1st preaseason game vs. Oakland? I am worried once news spreads about Fresno's RB that the line will keep going up. I wonder if I should put something on Wisky now at -7 and middle it if the line goes up or let it ride if I still like it and/or the line doesn't move. I'm already upset my book didn't come out w/ a line until it already moved to 7. I just don't want to miss out again if it keeps going up.

Western Michigan senior defensive end Anthony Allsbury suffered a knee injury in last Friday?s practice that will keep him out of action for the entire season. The injury has been diagnosed as an MCL tear and rehab time could be anywhere from six to eight months. Allsbury, who walked-on as a freshman, is a two-time All-MAC performer and was recently named to the Lombardi Award watch list. He redshirted in 1998, so he?ll have to petition the NCAA for a sixth year if he plans to return to the Broncos next season.

Corey Alexander departs from Colorado football team

Boulder, CO (Sports Network) - Corey Alexander, one of four Colorado football players arrested this spring after providing alcohol to minors at an off-campus party that was the center of a rape investigation, has decided to leave the university.

Alexander will attend Texas Southern in his hometown of Houston, Texas and plans on playing both football and baseball, according to his attorney, Lee Strickler.

A defensive back with the Buffaloes, Alexander joined defensive end Marques Harris last week, as they both pleaded guilty to obtaining alcohol for minors during a December 7th party.

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Alexander, who participated in 13 games as a sophomore last year, received an 18-month deferred sentence, and must perform 36 hours of community service.
