stros.....

The Houston Astros acquired infielder Mark Loretta from the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday for cash and two players to be named.Loretta was hitting .267 with two home runs and 19 RBIs in 86 games this season..
The Astros also purchased the contract of Left-hander Jeriome Robertson from Triple-A New Orleans. Robertson will start Monday's game at Texas. He was the Pacific Coast League pitcher of the year this season with a 12-8 record and 2.55 ERA.
He's not a real high-velocity guy," Astros assistant general manager Tim Purpura said of Robertson. "He's a mid- to upper-80s (fastball) pitcher. He pitches very effectively in the (strike) zone. He has a good breaking ball that he can throw to the inside of the plate on righties and lefties. He's been very effective against lefthanded hitters.

"In his earlier role, we had him in the bullpen, but this year we've had him starting, and he's done a really nice job as far as being able to handle both righthanded and lefthanded hitters. And he's got a good changeup, so he's got three good pitches that he's able to compete with.

"He's very aggressive, he goes after hitters, and he works pretty quick. He has command of the strike zone, which is why he was named PCL Pitcher of the Year this year."

The Astros called up three players from Triple-A New Orleans, catcher Raul Chavez and right-handers Brad Lidge and Brandon Puffer.

When the Astros entered their clubhouse Saturday, they were greeted by a new addition -- a large oil painting of former Astro Darryl Kile. The picture, painted by Opie Otterstadt, recalls a happier time, featuring a close-up of Kile embracing catcher Scott Servais after Kile's no-hitter against the New York Mets on Sept. 8, 1993.
Several Astros stopped and admired the painting, which is hanging near the clubhouse entrance.
"I think it's great," said Craig Biggio. "I think Opie did a really nice job on it. It was really tastefully done. He does great work. And to have it (the painting) here, where he (Kile) spent most of the time of his career, is very fitting."

Arizona Diamondbacks
-- The last time RHP Curt Schilling and LHP Randy Johnson lost in a series was Aug. 21 and 23, 2001, at Pittsburgh. There was a game between those outings. ... Manager Bob Brenly will add six players to the major-league roster today, and three more on Tuesday. Brenly said C Rod Barajas and OF Mark Little would join the team today. Four players will be activated off the disabled list -- Ps Todd Stottlemyre, Armando Reynoso and Mike Morgan, and 3B Chris Donnells.

Chicago Cubs
-- OF Sammy Sosa missed his seventh and eighth straight games and is not expected back before Monday because of a sore back and neck. Sosa has now missed 11 games this season -- the same number he missed in the previous five years combined.

St. Louis Cardinals
-- P Jason Isringhausen was unavailable because of a strained right shoulder. Isringhausen was warming up to pitch the ninth inning Friday when he felt something in his shoulder and was unable to pitch. He's listed as day-to-day

pretty decent article that mentions some pitchers who could be called up this month...

Angels Activate Salmon, Cook

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) ? The Anaheim Angels activated right fielder Tim Salmon, left-handed reliever Dennis Cook and rookie outfielder Julio Ramirez from the disabled list on Sunday.

The Angels, leading the AL wild-card race, also recalled left-handed pitcher Mark Lukasiewicz from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Salmon took live batting practice Sunday for the first time since Aug. 10, when a fastball by Toronto's Steve Parris left him with a deep bone bruise on his left hand. The Angels career home run leader took 43 swings against batting coach Mickey Hatcher, hitting three pitches over the walls.

Salmon, who last appeared on Aug. 14 as a pinch-runner, is batting .297 with 18 homers and 76 RBIs in 114 games.

Cook, who hasn't pitched for the Angels since July 4, went on the disabled list the following day because of a torn labrum and rotator cuff and missed 52 games. He is 1-1 with a 2.86 ERA in 33 appearances.

Ramirez, used primarily this season as a pinch-runner and late-inning defensive replacement, is 7-for-24 in 20 games. He has been sidelined since June 16 because of a strained left calf.

Lukasiewicz, optioned to the minors on Aug. 24 when Mickey Callaway was promoted to take injured Aaron Sele's spot in the rotation, last pitched for the Angels on May 18 at Chicago. He is 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA in 14 appearances.

ut- looks like most like anaheim, obviously they've been playing pretty well lately and balt has dumped 8 in a row. balt has one of their best starters going so tonight is their best shot. one thing to look at on lopez though is he threw a lot in winter ball..Lopez has already won 23 games and pitched 238.2 innings, if you add his performances for Baltimore and Culican(mexican winter league). After producing his 6-0 record and 2.57 ERA in July, Lopez has a 5.50 ERA in August.
good sporting news article talks about the effect of all this pitching..
September arm in August" is a meaningful (if imprecise) term for the early symptoms of fatigue that commonly arise near the end of the season. The phenomenon is often associated with working a winter ball schedule before the beginning of spring training. Any veteran pitcher will tell you that the season is a marathon, and a hurler must pace himself through the summer to remain strong in the final weeks. For pitchers who have been in competitive situations several weeks before spring training, the marathon can be longer usual. full article here....

lackey has been really strong. He keeps the ball down, has solid command, good stuff and has shown maturity since dominating trip a and getting called up. interesting to note that lefties hit under .200 but righties are over .300 right now off lackey..and anaheim has only lost 1 of his 6 home starts this season. lineups still arent out but i understand why most people like anaheim here...........also balt's first look at lackey, advantage pitcher

good luck, 2 lefties and 7 righties for balt could make it interesting but i still think anaheim has the advantage as ortiz' shutout last night has their bullpen at full strength...
