Thought after Nixon lessons were learned. The excuse used by government is. We need to protect CIA agents identities In that case we need to burn everything on file. And sure as heck can't have folks like Cheney and Libby giving out names to the world.

I think they think we are stupid.

Real reason tapes burnt is that they show waterboarding.

Not a good time to have that recorded for Bush and Chenys legacy.

The fact that Bush and Cheney are still in power proves that we are a very stupid people.

Probe begins over destroyed interrogation tapes
CIA, Justice Department to determine if full investigation is warranted

Breaking news

NBC News and news services
updated 9 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The CIA announced Saturday that the Justice Department and the CIA's internal watchdog have "initiated a preliminary inquiry" into the destruction of interrogation videos of two al-Qaida operatives.

The preliminary inquiry will be used to to gather initial facts needed to determine if a full investigation is warranted, CIA spokesman Mark Mansfield said in an e-mailed statement.

"I welcome this inquiry and the CIA will cooperate fully," CIA Director Mike Hayden said in a statement. "I welcome it as an opportunity to address questions that have arisen over the destruction back in 2005 of videotapes."

Hayden told agency employees Thursday that the recordings were destroyed out of fear the tapes would leak and reveal the identities of interrogators.

He said the sessions were videotaped to provide an added layer of legal protection for interrogators using new, harsh methods authorized by President Bush as a way to break down the defenses of recalcitrant prisoners.

The CIA's acting general counsel, John Rizzo, is preserving all remaining records related to the videotapes and their destruction, according to Kenneth L. Wainstein, assistant attorney general.

Justice Department officials, lawyers from the CIA general counsel's office and the CIA inspector general will meet early this coming week to begin the preliminary inquiry, Wainstein wrote Rizzo on Saturday.

"I understand that your office has already reviewed the circumstances surrounding the destruction of the videotapes, as well as the existence of any pending relevant investigations or other preservation obligations at the time the destruction occurred. As a first step in our inquiry, I ask that you provide us the substance of that review at the meeting," Wainstein wrote.

Congressional Democrats had demanded that the Justice Department investigate. Some accused the CIA of a cover-up and described the CIA's explanation as "a pathetic excuse."

I would of thought the Plame incident would have been enough for one or both.

You're right though AR......if the Dems had any nuts, they would at least keep exploring articles of impeachment to keep it in the news cycle. The DNCC could spend all its money on positive spin instead of attacking vulnerable GOP seats, since the public indictment from media coverage of the circus would pretty much paint any Republican as a Bush/Cheney acolyte.

Don't think it would be to great for the nation, but who knows. Maybe we need a seismic event to kick everyone in the head, shake the evangelicals out of the GOP, and bring both parties to the table for constructive discussion to initiate real change in the way we do our business.

I think that's true. We really don't need a trip through the mud. I believe we should let the lame ducks fly away and try to start over as well.

How utterly shocking and what would really be horrendous is to find out GW ordered his security adviser to steal and destroy tapes--imprisonment for both--correct?

--or would million dollar speaking engagements and $10,000 fine be more appropriate--

--and while on topic the Dems currently have 2 biggies they fighting tooth and nail on--

waterboarding the mastermind of 911--and insisting we give UBL's chaffeur an attorney--

--could we get show of hands here from forum Dems on which of 2 they consider more important on their war on terror ;)

Hyprocritical award of week goes to Kennedy who ranted on biggest cover up since Nixon--maybe we need to re open investigation of Chappaquiddick. :)

everybody`s so worried about us "waterboarding" the animals that want to chop our heads off......the same guys that:

flew those planes into the wtc?
planted bombs on the trains in madrid?
packed bombs aboard the tubes in london?
slaughtered 100's of innocent children in beslan?
destroyed the american embassies in the nations of africa?

thes same guys that never wear any uniforms ....that murder any of our troops they capture.....that never signed on to any sort sort of geneva agreement.....

you want to bring them here and give them habeas corpus?....

and by all accounts it was the waterboarding that led to khalid muhammad`s giving up crucial information that probably saved american lives......

you guys want more bullshit investigations that waste more time....while congress accomplishes little...

you`re the problem...

is anyone shocked that these morons in congress have a lower approval rating than bush?....

bush is gone in a year...he`s effectively a lame duck aside from the war(which the dems are losing support over due to the success of the surge)....

so we have nbc nixing generic pro-troop ads?......cia reports (from plame`s buds, probably)saying that iran has put their nuclear plans on hold as of 2003(and we`re getting this info in 2007?......wasn`t that around the time that we took saddam out and khaddafi gave up on his nuclear aspirations?...what a coincidence,eh?....how come nobody mentioned that?).....

ahmadinajhad is publicly ecstatic over this news(even though they still have literally hundreds of centrifuges going full bore and still refuse to let the u.n. have full access?)......

and we`re worried about impeaching bush to "shake the evangelists out of the g.o.p"?

hows about stop playing gotcha politics and do something constructive....for a change.....

think maybe that might shake things up a bit?....

i got a fight to watch.....

no offense man...but,whoa....

Yeh we could have impeachment precedings against Bush and Cheney that would cost us taxpayers 20 million dollars and result in nothing.

Sounds like whitewater , Hillary , slick willy all over again and again. Havent we had enough of that crap. Millions spent on their shenanigans.

How can anyone consider Hillary for President. It makes me sick thinking about it.

i still don't think that she'll be president...but i'd rather have her than obama...wouldn't you ?
..........................................................

honestly I would take Obama before I would take Hillary.

And today Andrew Young said that Hillary is blacker than Obama

Andy owes the Clintons big time favors.
