In general, Islanders of have been controlling games, but just not getting wins - Islanders are still 3rd in NHL in Score-adj Corsi since All Star break, and 2nd in both Score-adj Fenwick and in Score-adj Shots on Goal. That (along with their recent unusually low PDO of 96.4) almost always means wins will start coming sooner than later.
and specifically, I like the intangibles converging today - Coach Capuano was very heated and mad after Thur's loss to the Kings. He calmed down in his remarks Friday somewhat, tho he did call out the leaders to lead more, and hinted he was going to shake up the top line.
Tavares Thursday took responsibility for his poor play, and the team's. He is right when he points out NYI's getting some bad luck but are playing well of late - except for Thursday: they have that poor effort to bounce back from.
Also, today's game is the final day game at the Old Barn (NHL considers tomorrow's 5PM EST tilt vs Red Wings as a night game)
and Anaheim Ducks can still punch their ticket to the playoffs today by losing in OT or the shootout.
plus, Anaheim has been getting lucky in thier wins of late, getting goals with pulled goalie and such. Other than that, they've been losing by big margins. So those wins have them a bit over valued, while recent NYI losses - a lot against elite goalies (Talbot, Price, Hamburgler, Schneider, Dubnyk and Quick) - have them under valued.
