Report: QB Collins agrees to three-year deal with Raiders
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SportsTicker

NEW YORK (Ticker) - After refusing to take a pay cut with the New York Giants, it appears Kerry Collins is headed to the Oakland Raiders.

The New York Daily News is reporting that the veteran quarterback has agreed to a three-year contract with the Raiders.

Collins had visited with the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens, where former Giants coach Jim Fassel serves as a consultant, but reportedly decided to go to the Raiders.

That likely means the end of quarterback Rich Gannon's days in Oakland. The 38-year-old Gannon is coming off shoulder surgery that shortened his 2003 season and is due to make $7 million in 2004. With Gannon unwilling to take a pay cut, the Raiders turned to Collins, who has passed for more than 3,000 yards each of the past four seasons

It became obvious after the Giants acquired Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning, the first overall pick in the draft last month, that Collins' days were numbered in New York unless he accepted a drastic cut. But Collins did not want to play the role of tutor for Manning.

"I just feel like I have a few more years of being a starting quarterback in me," Collins said after being waived by the Giants.

In Oakland, Collins will throw to aging receivers Jerry Rice and Tim Brown and 25-year-old Jerry Porter. The Raiders made the Super Bowl in 2002 when Gannon was named as the NFL's Most Valuable Player, but faltered to 4-12 last season and fired coach Bill Callahan.

In the offseason, the Raiders helped their run defense with the signing of tackles Warren Sapp and Ted Washington. They stocked the offensive line in the draft, selecting tackle Robert Gallery and guard-center Jake Grove in the first two rounds. Oakland also signed running backs Amos Zereoue and Troy Hambrick after losing Charlie Garner and now appears to be on the verge of making a switch at quarterback.

The Giants' starting quarterback since midway through the 1999 season, Collins led them to the Super Bowl in 2000 after throwing for 381 yards and five touchdowns in the NFC championship game against Minnesota.

Collins played in 71 games with the Giants and ranked second in completions (1,447) and third in passing yards (16,875). He started 67 straight games before an ankle injury forced him to miss the final three games last season, when he completed 57 percent of his passes for 3,110 yards and 13 touchdowns with 16 interceptions.

i would like to see gannon go to the giants instead of warner.

with their off. line questionable, gannon's feet & arm are more valuable than just warner's arm.

Actually saying Gannon is out is premature. But he will be gone after June 1.
Gannon did have major shoulder surgery last season, and he may never be 100%. He is 38 years old. Plus he has now felt the great warm climate of California.
It may be time to retire.
The trouble the Giants, or everyone else, will face is that the price of a starting QB (Gannon, Warner & Testaverde) has now gone up some. San Diego, Baltimore, San Francisco, Giants, Arizona, Dallas, Chicago etc could use a descent mid-priced veteran.

I've heard that Tampa is the #1 place where Gannon will go. Can you guess why?

Chucky has been displeased with what Brad Johnson has done with the offense even though it was the offensive line that let him down last year. Gannon is still an excellent quarterback when he has time to throw, and Tampa Bay's re-tooled offensive line makes that situation attractive. Maybe Charlie Garner will put a few whispers into Gannon's ear and ask him to take a pay cut.

Believe it or not, I think that is an amiable situation for Gannon.

If Johnson gets cut, maybe a team like Baltimore or Miami might pick him up.

This offseason has quickly become the year of the veteran QB.

I think Gannon still has a fair amount in the tanmc Tama Bay does look like a good situation for him.

Now as for Collins, well, I wonder if he'll pan out in Oakland. I believe he'll fit into what Norv Turner wants from an O, so I can see why the raiders want him.

A problem the Raiders have not talked about is back-up QB Tuasisopo (pardon the spelling). He looked good in flashes but then got hurt. He always felt that he would replace Gannon in a year or two. Now that is down the tubes. His original contract will be up soon (after this year???). He will want a chance to start. He knows the Raiders gave up on him. Its time to move on.

So what do the Raiders do for a young QB to train??

Well the Raiders had a very languid demeanor when it came to trading for Eli Manning or possibly drafting Ben Roethlisberger or Phillip Rivers which basically shows that this team is interested in winning right now.

Tuiassosopo did look good in his limited playing time last year and the more playing time he gets, the better he will be. Unfortunately the Raiders do not have the patience for him to get in his bumps and bruises while dragging the team down to a sub par record. The biggest problem for Marques is that he was not a highly touted pick, and although there has been some hinting at him being the replacement for Rich Gannon, the majority of the Raider Nation has not expected this from him. That's why if they cut Gannon, didn't sign Collins, and gave the reigns to the Hawaiin sensation, there would be a maniacal reaction from the fanbase in Oakland.

did anyone see the game against detroit ? he looked terrible until he was removed from the field following a knee injury. tui is not the guy, sorry. he was a very good college qb - not great. he is short and does not possess a great arm either. however, we will never truly know his worth regardless of the injury. the wr position in oak is far too old. brown/rice should never be on the field together unless it is a 4wr set. porter on one side and one of the rookies on the other. maybe after june 1st we can pu a bargain at rec ?
