Observations from the Honda

I'm interested in gathering some of your thoughts on what you noticed this weekend that may be beneficial for next week or further down the road. Who impressed you? Who played well but didn't get the putts to fall? Any thing you guys may have noticed over the duration of the Honda. Who appears to be really struggling these days? Who do you have pegged for the winners circle this season besides the obvious Tiger and Mickelson types.

I had Brad Faxon to win and place at Olympic this week and he was oh so close but Matt Kuchar was very impressive on the back side. His short game and putting was way more solid under pressure than I ever would have expected.

The swing changes that Faxon has made appear to have faulted him into the elite category of players on tour. Everyone knows about his putting but now he's driving the ball beautifully and hitting it close way more than in the past. He should be a force on tour all season and should win at least once.

Chris Dimarco started strong like he seems to just about every week. He commented after the second round (i believe it was round 2) that he was driving the ball awesome and was hitting it close but he just couldn't make any putts. He didn't do much the rest of the way. Do you think this is something to worry about because of his past history of putting problems or is this just two bad weeks and he'll get it going again?

There was more solid play from Kenny Perry but he just couldn't quite get there in the end. Mike Weir may have been the best player this week but that quick hook into the waste area killed him. After a double bogey in a shootout final round he just couldn't recover mentally. Knowing that he had probably blown the tournament right there. I think he may be a player who is ready for some very high finishes and possibly a win in the coming weeks.

If I had to pick a winner for next week it just might be Phil Mickelson (is he playing?). The only thing Phil was missing today was the putter. He was lipping out all day long but appears to be in very good form.

Another observation is how strong the PGA Tour is right now. Just look at all the so called no names who are at the top of the leaderboard every week. Even in some strong fields these guys are there right until the end.

Some players I will likely try my luck with until they win: Mike Weir, Charles Howell III, Brad Faxon, and John Daly.

Where can statistics from individual tournaments be found? Is there a site that will have the leaders in all the major category's from the Honda and previous events? I've been looking around but can only seem to find year to date stats. Thanks.

One thing I noticed (whilst supporting Faxon into the inevitable 2nd place!) was Robert Damron finishing joint top of the Putting Stats - onto his "home" course at Bay Hill - 140/1 Centrebet could prove generous

Robbo, you can find player stats per tournament at the golfonline site, 'golfstats' section. Select a tournament, click on 'Career Stats' and then click on the year on the next page. So for the Honda Classic, the link is

One thing I've noticed is that DiMarco and Calc were #1 and #2 in the putting average stats coming off the West Coast Swing. Now they're both sliding down the rankings fast as the types of greens are very different in Florida. Time for me to stop backing DiMarco.

Also backed Faxon last week. Agree that he is now a better player from tee to green than before, but I am not yet convinced that the swing will really hold up under pressure on a tougher course. It certainly didn't in the World Matchplay and if you look at his event stats this year, his greens in regulation rankings are not that impressive.

He's been talking up John Daly every week for the last 6 months. I always browse his 'What and Who to watch for' and although I agree Dalys game has significantly come round, he still lacks consistency with his scoring irons. His undoing at the Honda was his inability to take advantage of the reachable par 5's which invariably is his bread and butter. However, when he has been in contention this year he hasn't made the birdies where solid driving has got him into good scoring positions. I vow to stay clear of long John till I see an improvement in his ability to convert a little better from 130 yrds and in. Now watch as he wins Bay Hill by 5 shots.

Whether had alot to do with this Tour. with anywhere
from 18 to 30 holes being played, Faxo got lucky , First
day and conditions where there for the list of contenders.
Weir, would hold off on any large win wagers, I think
his physce was hurt in this one after 36 and 54 for and
to collapse like that? Had

Lonard and Appleby with Field bet so I made a Lil profit
