Showalter (AL) & Melvin (NL) Head List Of Potential Coaching Casualties
WILLEMSTAD, CURACAO (March 28, 2006)?The first pitch of the 2006 Major League Baseball season takes place this weekend and all 30 franchises enter the season with World Series aspirations. As teams get off to slow starts and fail to meet pre-season expectations, their fans and local media will inevitably begin calling for a managerial change. With Major League managers often ?the fall guy? for underachieving teams, PinnacleSports.com today announced odds on which American and National League managers will be the first to be fired or resign from their posts during the 2006 season.
The largest sports betting site on the Internet, PinnacleSports.com has calculated odds on all 30 MLB managers becoming the first in their respective league to have their managerial reign cut short this year. Texas Rangers skipper Buck Showalter and Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin have earned the dubious distinction as being 5/1 co-favorites to lose their jobs first in the AL and NL, respectively. Other managers who could either be the first to resign or receive a pink slip in the American League include: Ron Gardenhire, Minnesota Twins (6/1); Mike Hargrove, Seattle Mariners (13/2); John Gibbons, Toronto Blue Jays (7/1); Buddy Bell, Kansas City Royals (8/1); and Terry Francona, Boston Red Sox (9/1). PinnacleSports.com believes several skippers on the senior circuit may also find themselves on ?the hot seat,? including: Chicago Cubs? Dusty Baker (6/1); Colorado?s Clint Hurdle (6/1); Philadelphia?s Charlie Manuel (7/1); Washington?s Frank Robinson (15/2); and Milwaukee?s Ned Yost (19/2).
?The turnover rate for head coaches and managers in professional sports has skyrocketed as the eight new MLB skippers this season clearly demonstrates,? said Simon Noble of PinnacleSports.com. ?A number of managers are definitely under fire entering the 2006 campaign and a poor start could mark an early exit. Professional franchises used to show restraint by making managerial changes only in the off-season, but now front offices simply look for the quick fix in hopes of righting a sinking ship and keeping fans in the seats.?
Despite leading the White Sox to their first World Series victory in 88 years, PinnacleSports.com lists Ozzie Guillen at only 10/1 to be the first AL manager to get his walking papers, along with Oakland?s Ken Macha and new Devil Rays manager Jon Maddon. The odds on rookie Baltimore skipper Sam Perlozzo not making it to a second season are at 12/1, while Cleveland?s Eric Wedge comes in at 25/2 to be the first American League manager ousted from his post. Long shots to become the first AL skipper to resign or be fired are Detroit?s Jim Leyland (16/1), Anaheim?s Mike Scoiscia (16/1), and the Yankees? Joe Torre (19/1).
PinnacleSports.com lists the chances of Cincinnati?s Jerry Narron being the first National League manager to lose his job at 21/2 followed by Houston?s Phil Garner at 13/1. Newly appointed managers Joe Girardi and Grady Little appear to have the same amount of job security as veterans Bruce Bochy and Felipe Alou, who are all listed at 15/1 to be the first NL manager fired this season. According to PinnacleSports.com the Mets? Willie Randolph (20/1), Pirates? Jim Tracy (20/1), Braves? Bobby Cox (27/1) and Cardinals? Tony LaRussa (40/1) are the least likely to lose their jobs in the senior circuit this season.
