Odds to win 2002 Heisman Trophy (as of 10/9/02)
Dec 30, 2002 08:00 pm ET

Byron Leftwich 20-1

Charles Rogers 5-2

Chris Simms 40-1

Field (any others) 4-1

Ken Dorsey 7-5

Lee Suggs 15-1

Maurice Clarett 10-1

Onterrio Smith 35-1

Rex Grossman 25-1

Seneca Wallace 3-1

Willis McGahee 8-1

...thinking of taking Crissy Simms at 40-1 and covering my outlay with Dorsey at 7-5. any thoughts?

Can you explain to me how this works and how you could cover yourself by takeing Dorsey at 7-5 ?

I havnt played any futures bets. I dont get it. I know how much you could win at the 40-1 but how do you cover it with Dorsey play ? How much do you wager on each ?

Thanks

scott, i was simply thinking that these odds on simms may not be as high if texas beats ok this weekend.... also, i think that you could throw out almost everyone on the list other than these four guys....

Charles Rogers 5-2
Chris Simms 40-1
Ken Dorsey 7-5
Seneca Wallace 3-1

...although i could easily see any of these four winning it, i suspect that if miami keeps on the path that they are on, the winner will be dorsey. granted, if wallace or rogers wins, i would lose both wagers, but i though i'd take a long shot on crissy simms (on the off chance he doesn't choke this year) and cover my outlay (play enough on dorsey at 7-5 to cover what i got on simms) on dorsey. what do ya think? anyone? bueler? bueler?

p.s. does anyone think that simms should be 40-1? behind grossman and onterio smith?

First of all, Simms won't win the Heisman. And here's why.

When you have a number of decent canidates (as you had last year and you have this year), Heisman voters typically vote for the better player in their locale. Simms has Wallace to deal with, as voters in their areas will likely give the nod (at this point) to Wallace. If ISU loses a few games and Texas wins out, those votes will shift, but Simms does not have a firm grip on those votes. Smith should carry most of the votes from the west, and the remaining ones should go to Wallace. Tough for Simms to over come that.

That all being said, I think Dorsey will have a hard time winning as well. You are looking at east coast votes getting split between Rogers, Dorsey, Leftwich, Clarett, McGahee, Grossman, Rivers, Jones, etc. Im not sure I could pick the top 4 out of that group. Keep in mind of course, we still have some huge games left to play that should shake some of these names out of the list.

Clarett is my pick for the trophy...he is a stud.

when they beat VA Tech in the Fiesta Bowl there will be no doubt in the voters minds!

...well, since no freshman or sophmore has ever won, i can't see clarett winning. as for the votes being split, i can see your point.

...i'm thinking in regards to wallace, they (iowa st.) are getting into the tough part of their schedule these next few weeks. his stock could drop unless they win some big games vs texas and ok. however, if simms can finally win the big one, his odds will go way down after this weekend.

...i was kinda worried about McGahee, but it being "the year of the quarterback" - i've still got to lean with dorsey, wallace or simms. i agree that it's a long-shot, but i still don't think that simms should be 40-1, ya know?

...hell, i'm probably way off base, but i just wanted to throw it out there for comments and discussion. anyway, got to run. anybody feel free to chime in with your thoughts or opinions. thanks.

They vote before the bowl games, so it wont matter what a player does in the bowls. IMO.........if Miami goes undefeated Dorsey will win by a large margin........if fact I think he is the leading candidate now with no one even close to him.

Like the Simms selection because chances are slim we'll see better odds if Texas wins this weekend. The guy I also like is McGahee. People will have to stop overlooking his eight yards per carry. Keep in mind, the kid rarely plays in the fourth quarter. A good run defense like Virginia Tech will determine whether or not McGahee is a real Heisman contender. The lone drawback with McGahee so far has been his age and a sophomore has never won a Heisman trophy.
