GAME NOTES: Oklahoma State, out of the Big 12 Conference, and Southern Mississippi, of Conference USA, will battle in the Houston Bowl. Both teams finished with identical records, 7-5 overall and 5-3 in their respective conferences. The game is being played at Houston's Reliant Stadium, home of the NFL's Houston Texans. The Cowboys' participation in the game marks their first postseason appearance since falling in the 1997 Alamo Bowl to Purdue, 33-20. In it's history, Oklahoma State is 9-4 in bowl play. For the Golden Eagles, the game will be their first appearance in a bowl game since defeating TCU in the 2000 Mobile Alabama Bowl. All-time, Southern Miss has won five bowl games in 12 outings. The Houston Bowl is in its first year under its new moniker as it was formerly known as Galleryfurniture.com Bowl. Last season the game pitted a pair of Texas schools against each another as Texas A&M defeated TCU, 28-9. The inaugural game pitted Texas Tech and East Carolina against each other, with the Red Raiders prevailing, 40-27. The two schools playing this year should be familiar with one another as they have faced off in each of the last two seasons, with Southern Miss winning both times. The Golden Eagles defeated the Cowboys, 28-6 on September 23, 2000 and then 17-9 in the season opener for both schools on September 2, 2001. The two meetings represent the only time the schools have met on the gridiron.

The Golden Eagles did not get to this game because of their offense. They rank 98th out of 117 Division I-A teams, averaging 333.17 ypg of total offense, and rank 93rd in the nation in scoring, averaging 21.58 ppg. Using a balanced offensive attack, the Eagles are led by First Team All-Conference USA selection Derrick Nix. The USM running game ranked fourth in the conference and 65th in the nation, gaining 143.3 ypg. Nix (219 carries, 1,230 yards, 11 TDs), who was on target to not only finish as the school's all-time leading rusher but also perhaps C-USA's, will miss this game and is in for the fight of his life as he battle a serious kidney ailment. With Nix out of commission, the USM passing game, under the direction of first-year starting quarterback Mickey D'Angelo, will need to be even more of a factor. D'Angelo enters the contest sporting a 116.64 pass efficiency rating, hitting 122-of-237 attempts for 1,647 yards. D'Angelo's favorite targets are wideouts Chris Johnson and Marvin Young. Johnson caught a team-high 45 balls for 606 yards and three scores, while Young caught 40 balls for 607 yards.

The Southern Miss defense is outstanding and is the reason the team has reached the postseason. The Golden Eagles ranked as the number two pass efficiency defense in the country, and number five against the pass overall in allowing a paltry 157.1 ypg. The unit also ranked 11th in scoring defense and was 25th in total defense. The Golden Eagles also led the nation in passing touchdowns against, having permitted just four passing scores all year. Led by All-American Eric Pruitt, the Golden Eagle defense is an opportunistic bunch, having pulled in 15 interceptions as a team. Pruitt recorded six picks on the season, adding to his impressive 124 total tackles. While Pruitt is clearly the unit's emotional leader, Rod Davis has held his own, as he led the team in tackles with 157, including 116 solo efforts, 23.5 TFLs and 10.5 sacks.

Oklahoma State's offense performed at levels not seen before in the program's history, particularly with respect to its aerial exploits. Led by Josh Fields, the Cowboy passing attack averaged 258.7 ypg, ranking the unit third in the Big 12 and 27th in the nation. Fields threw for 2,835 yards and 29 touchdowns, while completing 205-of-368 pass attempts. Fields' favorite target is All- American wideout Rashaun Woods. The skilled junior led the Big 12 in almost all receiving categories this season, finishing the regular season with 98 catches for 1,531 yards and 16 touchdowns. All three totals established new single-season OSU school records, and he leads the nation in receiving touchdowns. The ground game centers on Tatum Bell, who carried the ball 162 times for 936 yards and 10 scores, leaving him just 64 yards shy of reaching the magical 1,000-yard mark. The running game ranks the team seventh in the Big 12 and 63rd nationally. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the OSU offense is its ability to put points on the board. The team averaged 34.4 ppg this season, placing it 16th among all Division I-A teams, but still fourth among its fellow Big 12 members.

As good as the Cowboys' offense has been this year, the defense has been equally as bad. Ranking 87th overall, the Cowboys average allowances of 405.2 ypg and 27.8 ppg is clearly way too much. The defensive line is led by First Team All-Big 12 selection Kevin Williams. Williams has not recorded a great amount of total tackles, just 54 (43 solo), but has made those stops count as he leads the team with 10 TFLs and is second on the team with four sacks. Redshirt Freshman Paul Duran leads OSU in tackles with 81, including 55 solo efforts. The rookie linebacker also recorded four TFLs, one sack, three pass deflections and a fumble recovery. As a unit the Cowboys did a decent job against the run, as they allowed 147 ypg on the ground, ranking them 49th in the nation and fifth in the conference. As for their effort against the pass, that's another story as foes are airing it out for 258.17 ypg, ranking them 11th in the Big 12 and 105th in the nation.

This game should come down to defense, as both offenses are talented and are capable of putting a ton of points on the board. It will be up to D'Angelo to produce against a porous OSU pass defense. The Golden Eagles must get Williams blocked before they do anything, however, as he is capable of wreaking havoc in the backfield. As for the Cowboys, they must find a way to score against this talented defense. Fields must be given time to allow Woods to perform at the level he has in the past. If they get the ball to their gamebreaker, Woods can basically win the game himself. The key for OSU is to get some kind of running game established against the talented Golden Eagle defense.
