MOVING DOWNWARD
LAS VEGAS -- It?s a rainy Friday in Las Vegas, just like the scene in Glendale, Ariz., where Super Bowl XLIX kickoffs Sunday afternoon. Rain is bad news for the Super Bowl festivities planned throughout the Phoenix vicinity, but Vegas casinos love the rain because it keeps the visitors and their cash corralled in one place.
The rain benefits table games and slots, but it?s not that a big deal for the sports books, because most of the 307,000 visitors this weekend came here with the expectation of wagering a set amount on the Seahawks or Patriots, as well as dabbling in the hundreds of Super Bowl prop bets.
?Our room (the sports book at the Mirage) is pretty full right now, and I don?t know if it?s because of the rain,? MGM Resorts VP of race and sports Jay Rood told The Sporting News on Friday. ?But we started to see big crowds arrive yesterday, and the volume with the basketball action was outstanding. We had a pretty good night.?
Movement on the total
Rood had some good action on the Super Bowl total Thursday night and dropped his number from 48 down to 47.5, which has become the prevailing number around town.
?We moved at about 8 p.m. (PT) and had taken enough from sharp money that we?re just slowing them down. I imagine we?ll be at 48 again soon, but we?re going to let some OVER action balance us out before going back. The parlay action has been mostly tied to the OVER at whatever the number has been.?
MGM?s chain of 10 books across the Strip opened the total at 49.5 two Sunday?s ago. The remaining 48s available in town are at the South Point, William Hill, Stratosphere, Aliante and Golden Nugget. Coast Resorts and Stations Casinos both dropped to 47.5 Thursday as well.
Holding the line
Nothing has changed with the side, as the majority of books are steady at Patriots -1, while William Hill, Aliante and Coast are at pick ?em. William Hill and Coasts are charging -115 vig with the Patriots, with the Seahawks offered at a pick -105.
Since moving from pick ?em to Patriots -1 on Jan. 19, Rood has seen steady action on both sides.
?We?re still a little high on Patriots cash, but we have more tickets written on Seattle, which now doesn?t come as much of a shock after seeing several of these public opinion polls that they're siding with Seattle at about 54 percent."
What the books will be rooting for
Rood?s worst-case scenario with the four possible outcomes is the same as most books in town.
?Patriots to OVER is our worst situation. The win from the other three options add up to the same amount we?ll lose with Patriots to OVER.?
The big contributor to the MGM?s Patriots risk is a seven-figure wager on the Patriots.
Props action
Rood is seeing good action on the hundreds of props tied to the game, but the one that has piled up the most one-sided risk among two-way props is UNDER 2 fumbles (both teams combined).
"We've seen Lynch OVER categories get some play, but the most one-sided prop has been UNDER 2 fumbles ? all wagers from sharp money. The wagers were likely just a play on what some of the other books have posted on the same prop, but we opened UNDER at pick 'em and we're at -300 now."
That's a significant move in any type of bookmaking situation, but was surely aided by professional props players getting an edge with the Westgate SuperBook posting UNDER 1.5 fumbles at -175 and the OVER at +155. Bet the OVER at Westgate and UNDER at MGM and hope the number lands 2, which is the most likely occurrence.
