4 friends beat house 76 percent of time to win $736,000 in 'World Series of sports gambling'

LAS VEGAS ? If there's a secret to how four buddies managed to beat the house 76 percent of the time during the NFL's regular season to win a record-setting $736,575, they aren't giving it up.

The four sports bettors from Los Angeles and Boston achieved a feat that was unheard of in the annual SuperContest at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Contestants and organizers have likened the betting tradition to the World Series of Poker before that card contest caught fire, now attracting thousands who believe anyone has a chance to win.

"This is like the World Series of sports gambling," said Justin Green, 30, one of the four friends who won.

For each of the regular season's 17 weeks, contestants pick the team to beat the sports book's point spread in five different games. When the regular season ended Dec. 28, the foursome that called itself the CH Ballers was the clear victor, picking correctly in 64 out of 85 games.

Good for them !! :0008

I can say the team I WANT to win....won't.

best to you :toast:

Ok let me think about this now.

you could do so much better and you know it

I got to say Senor, knowing him like I do would want the Seahawks to take the two spot in a row Super Bowl champs.

so if that is true, I deduct that you are on New England big

just a hunch

Las Vegas sports book takes ?seven-figure wager? on Patriots
Posted by Mike Wilkening on January 30, 2015, 7:14 PM EST

You may very well like the Patriots to win Super Bowl XLIX.

But you probably aren?t quite as confident as the bettor who placed an absolutely gigantic wager on New England at an MGM Resorts International sports book in Nevada.

According to Micah Roberts of ?The Linemakers? of Sporting News, MGM took a ?seven-figure wager? on the Patriots over the Seahawks in Sunday?s Super Bowl.

Jay Rood, the vice president of race and sports at MGM, told PFT the bet was a wager on New England at pick ?em.

MGM did not receive a single million-dollar bet on last year?s Super Bowl, Rood said.

The Patriots are one-point favorites over Seattle at numerous Nevada sports books, including MGM?s properties, which include The Mirage and Bellagio.

MOVING DOWNWARD

LAS VEGAS -- It?s a rainy Friday in Las Vegas, just like the scene in Glendale, Ariz., where Super Bowl XLIX kickoffs Sunday afternoon. Rain is bad news for the Super Bowl festivities planned throughout the Phoenix vicinity, but Vegas casinos love the rain because it keeps the visitors and their cash corralled in one place.

The rain benefits table games and slots, but it?s not that a big deal for the sports books, because most of the 307,000 visitors this weekend came here with the expectation of wagering a set amount on the Seahawks or Patriots, as well as dabbling in the hundreds of Super Bowl prop bets.

?Our room (the sports book at the Mirage) is pretty full right now, and I don?t know if it?s because of the rain,? MGM Resorts VP of race and sports Jay Rood told The Sporting News on Friday. ?But we started to see big crowds arrive yesterday, and the volume with the basketball action was outstanding. We had a pretty good night.?

Movement on the total

Rood had some good action on the Super Bowl total Thursday night and dropped his number from 48 down to 47.5, which has become the prevailing number around town.

?We moved at about 8 p.m. (PT) and had taken enough from sharp money that we?re just slowing them down. I imagine we?ll be at 48 again soon, but we?re going to let some OVER action balance us out before going back. The parlay action has been mostly tied to the OVER at whatever the number has been.?

MGM?s chain of 10 books across the Strip opened the total at 49.5 two Sunday?s ago. The remaining 48s available in town are at the South Point, William Hill, Stratosphere, Aliante and Golden Nugget. Coast Resorts and Stations Casinos both dropped to 47.5 Thursday as well.

Holding the line

Nothing has changed with the side, as the majority of books are steady at Patriots -1, while William Hill, Aliante and Coast are at pick ?em. William Hill and Coasts are charging -115 vig with the Patriots, with the Seahawks offered at a pick -105.

Since moving from pick ?em to Patriots -1 on Jan. 19, Rood has seen steady action on both sides.

?We?re still a little high on Patriots cash, but we have more tickets written on Seattle, which now doesn?t come as much of a shock after seeing several of these public opinion polls that they're siding with Seattle at about 54 percent."

What the books will be rooting for

Rood?s worst-case scenario with the four possible outcomes is the same as most books in town.

?Patriots to OVER is our worst situation. The win from the other three options add up to the same amount we?ll lose with Patriots to OVER.?

The big contributor to the MGM?s Patriots risk is a seven-figure wager on the Patriots.

Props action

Rood is seeing good action on the hundreds of props tied to the game, but the one that has piled up the most one-sided risk among two-way props is UNDER 2 fumbles (both teams combined).

"We've seen Lynch OVER categories get some play, but the most one-sided prop has been UNDER 2 fumbles ? all wagers from sharp money. The wagers were likely just a play on what some of the other books have posted on the same prop, but we opened UNDER at pick 'em and we're at -300 now."

That's a significant move in any type of bookmaking situation, but was surely aided by professional props players getting an edge with the Westgate SuperBook posting UNDER 1.5 fumbles at -175 and the OVER at +155. Bet the OVER at Westgate and UNDER at MGM and hope the number lands 2, which is the most likely occurrence.

Sharp vs. Square

Sharp vs. Square

Even though the Super Bowl lines have been up in Las Vegas for several days, there?s a lingering suspicion that a lot of smart money will hit the board this weekend. Sharps who prefer New England bet very early in the process, sensing that public sentiment was going to be on the Patriots. Sharps preferring Seattle have taken some early positions, but are still hoping to see something better if there?s a game day surge from squares on Tom Brady.

Remember?tourists will just start arriving in Las Vegas Friday night for the big sports weekend. If early betting is any indication (and it almost always is), the bulk of those tourists will be betting on the Patriots.

Why?

*Squares love betting on Tom Brady

*Squares REALLY love betting on Tom Brady at cheap prices

*New England played great in the AFC Championship game

*Seattle needed a miracle to win the NFC Championship game

*A lot more casual fans ?hate? Seattle than ?hate? New England

Frankly, there?s a lot of dislike to go around because both are teams people ?love to hate? if they?re not directly involved in rooting for them. But, Seattle has an arrogant swagger that rubs more people the wrong way, while there?s some sentimental rooting for Brady because his time at the top of the sport is running out.

Why are so many sharps looking at Seattle?

*Sharps respect defense, particularly in championship games

*Sharps had Seattle as at least 2 points superior in their earlier Power Ratings

*Sharps know the public often overreacts to what happened in the last game

Probably the biggest factor is that most sharp syndicates had Seattle projected to be about -2 or -3 in the Super Bowl prior to the championship games. This deep in the season, they trust their numbers?.and aren?t likely to make a dramatic change based on an off-week for the Seahawks and a great game from the Patriots. Maybe they move their line a point?but they don?t move all the way to make New England the favorite.

And, that sets up this weekend. Not all sharps, but a meaningful number of sharps think Seattle should be the favorite?and they know a large influx of New England money has just arrived in Las Vegas. After investing a bit at +1 this past week ?just in case? that was the apex, they?ll wait and hope for something better by kickoff.

The Over/Under is down to 47.5 or even 47 as I write this. Last week we talked about how early money was on Under 49. I thought 48 might represent a low because the public usually bets Overs in the Super Bowl?particularly when the favorite is led by a Hall-of-Fame quarterback. That hasn?t happened yet?and doesn?t look like it?s going to for meaningful money. So, more sharp money had ventured in at 48 (a relatively common number because games can end 28-20, 27-21, 31-17, etc?) Sportsbooks have had to come down further to encourage Over money. They?re almost begging squares to bet the Over at 47.

Summarizing sharp betting so far:

*New England backers are in at +2, +1, and some at pick-em to a -1

*Seattle backers are in for a bit at +1, but are monitoring weekend action

*Totals players are in STRONG on the Under at 49 and 48.5, with more even coming in at 48.

There?s a chance that a sharp two-team teaser may come into play if New England is bet up to at least -1.5 by the public. That would put the game in the ?basic strategy? window which would allow Seattle backers to move +1.5 up to +7.5 (crossing both the 3 and the 7) in a six-point move. They would pair Seattle +7.5 with the Under?particularly if the public pushes the game back up to 48. Many sharps would find that combination (Seattle +7.5 and Under 54) very attractive if it comes into play, since they have the Seahawks as the ?real? favorite in their numbers because of their superior defense.

New England Patriots (14-4) vs. Seattle Seahawks (14-4)

Line Moves

Las Vegas Line Moves: The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas opened the Seahawks as 2 ?-point favorites over the Patriots. The line never went to 3 at the Westgate and quickly went down to pick ?em. A total of 48 ? was sent out at the SuperBook and its holding steady.

One would think with the amount of action the BIG GAME takes, one million dollars would not make a huge impact. Interesting? I don't give a damn who wins. I just want to be on the right side. There are a-holes on both teams. Steaming a-holes too. Good luck.
