Hope all is well. I'm looking to plant a magnolia tree in the front yard. I'm in zone 6 I believe in Wichita, KS. What are a couple best practices I should be leary of when planting? Is there a certain age of tree? A best side? Soil tests?

Also, when should I begin lawn care?

Feel free to make a trip out!

Have a great day and thanks. Wil search previous threads as well.

best to get the tree info from a local nursery..soil climate and fert info best obtained near by..

discuss w/him or her the next year or so of care.

lawn...

established already..

get the "Stonewall" by Lesco or similar brand granular down if ground temps are close to 50 degrees..

this well stop new growth of weeds and just about all the shytty grasses. makes sure this granular gets watered in at least a few days..they say you can go longer but I like to get it started right away/

now ya can do this app again in about 6 weeks..

second cut of the year ..wait 2 days and spray existing weeds with WEED B GONE are something similar..

kills existing weeds but not the grass,

use ROUND UP or something similar for grass and weeds on concrete and flower beds if ya do so carefully..

spring fert

less nitrogen and more phosphorous

Don't plant a magnolia tree. They royally suck. They aren't very pretty, and when mature, they are a terribly messy tree. They drop those big leaves constantly, and part of the year those seed pods. I had one, and I did not like it at all.

Try a redbud. Different and beautiful.

Awesome Mike, I really appreciate the feedback and time to respond. I'll follow your instructions to the tee and report back this weekend.

Thanks Clint, I'll research red bud now. Having never planted a magnolia you just saved me regrets in a few years. Wanted the tree to be planted same time as my son's birth. Shel Silverstein-esque Giving Tree.
