... about living in the country is there are few choices in high speed internet access. No cable modem, they say maybe in two or three years, but there's no hurry.

I checked with my phone company today (it's one of the last of the independents, which means the big companies can't come in here and compete. Some friggin' law somebody paid for I suppose, the guy that owns the local phone company is one of the richest guys in the state.) and anyway, my phone company tells me I can get DSL for, check this out, $139 PER MONTH, PLUS $239 installation fee !!!! Now THAT really sucks. I guess I'm stuck with the old dial-up for quite some time.

No your not. Check out starband. I think it is like $60 or $70 a month. A good buddy of mine has it and loves it. I think you can purchase one @ Radio Shack. I also think that DIsh Network sells them also.

I would watch your phone company. DSL is distance sensitive. You have to be pretty close to a Central Office to get DSL. Usually within 3 miles and on the right type of copper lines. They were probably trying to sell you IDSL. IDSL is a glorified ISDN line and only gets you around 140K. Certainly not worth $150/month.

The last I knew the only way to get starband from Radio Shack was to buy a whole computer/dish setup.
I don't know for sure if that's still the case, but Starband dealers, on the other hand, can set you up with an external satellite modem.
They don't support ethernet, so you have to have USB (won't work on win '95 according to them).
