Phil at Ott last night, only one shot by both teams combined in OT? Is my newspaper wrong, what's the deal? Or is this truly a game that nobody wanted to win?

About 1 chance out of 50 that such a thing happens (general - per 5 min of OT play, PP possibilities included). 0 shot ~= 1/270 btw. Now that I'm in:

0 shot ~= 1/270
1 shot ~= 1/50
2 shots ~= 1/17
3 shots ~= 1/9
4 shots ~= 2/13
5 shots ~= 1/6
6 shots ~= 1/6
7 shots ~= 1/8
8 shots ~= 1/12
9 shots ~= 1/20
10 shots ~= 1/35
11 shots ~= 1/75
12 shots ~= 1/170
13 shots ~= 1/420 (Flo vs Atl, March 3rd 2001)
.
.
.
>20 shots ~= 1/6,000,000 (still better chances to hit than winning the jackpot at 6/49)

This stuff is *almost* meaningless.. but isn't it fun to know?

Great breakdown!

The point I was trying to make is that even if you lose in OT you still get one point (in the regular season). The reason that they play 4 a side is to open things up. I also have seen some close tight checking regular season and playoff games, but never a game where there was 12 shots total, both teams. (that would be 1 shot in 5 minutes X 12).
I guess my feeling on regular season OT is my own. If I was the coach and there was a faceoff in the other end with 10 seconds or less left in OT I would pull my Goaltender. If the other team scores, so what, we still get our 1 point, same as an OT tie.

You said it.. I'm myself wondering why they never do it... Maybe there's some kind of "inside" rule in the league to prevent this kind of coaching decision.

i dunno, i always thought it was about both teams being in the same conference not wanting to give "easy points" to the opposition in their conference.
If there was a cross conference game, the overtime would be more open because the teams aren't jockeying for points in the same conference so they can afford to go for broke. I'd check the stats on that one:
How many overtime games have been decided by cross conference battles and those that have been decided by inter-conference battles...

TV, yes I have to agree with that - many analysts talked about that a number of times - a given team not willing to to let any free easy point to another team of their own conference. But it looks like it doesn't have much to do: clickhere and look at the last reply.. hard to understand.. the number of draws is about the same in inter-conference games...

Was away yesterday. As far as important conference games LA at SJ in regular time 41 shots in 60 minutes. In OT 7 shots in 1:53. Although different coaches will play it differently. As far as losing a point by pulling your goaltender in OT, probably explains alot, will look into it and get back to group.
