One Step To Perfection

By SPORTSBETTING.COM

As the Super Bowl hype machine really starts to rev up in the final week, we take a look at what is hopefully going to be a huge football game with more potential ?firsts? attached to it than Brett Favre?s entire season all rolled into one.

New England is going for perfection.

Two other teams in NFL history have reeled in 18 win seasons. There was the San Francisco 49ers in 1984 and then one year later, the Chicago Bears. Both earned their 18th win after a Super Bowl victory but each had one blemish against their record during the regular season. This year, along with the usual hype that accompanies what is perhaps the most-watched sporting event of the entire year, there is an undeniable variable attached to Super Bowl XLII that will likely have even the least interested of girlfriends watching from the corner of their eye at whatever bar or party they are dragged out to on Sunday afternoon. And even if you don?t like Tom Brady or the New England Patriots, you have to admit, the suspense is getting good.

Many bettors have already made up their minds on which side to back against the spread. Betting totals has been a bit of a challenge during the past few weeks, considering the weather that stormed through north eastern America, but that has been taken out of the equation in Arizona so a decision on the "Over" or "Under" has also been made by many.

It still leaves hundreds of props on the board for your perusal, along with the option of adding on to initial wagers ? and don?t forget the parlays that are sure to follow, connecting the game with some of the basketball and hockey action covering the weekend. But let?s take one betting question into consideration.
Where is the edge in a game that is going into such uncharted territory?

New England has exactly 20 players on its roster with Super Bowl experience and is led by the, what some call, ?evil-genius? (Bill Belichick), who just so happens to be riding a three-game win streak in Super Bowl appearances. Meanwhile, New York lists only three players that have been to the big dance and a head coach (Tom Coughlin) that holds the dubious distinction of coaching the most career games (205) without ever making it to the Super Bowl. Not a lot to go on there.

New York does know how to win away from home, and it?s a good thing. The Giants are the first-ever NFL team with a losing record on home turf (3-5) to play in the Super Bowl. They are also riding an NFL record 10-game single season win streak in road games but the only problem there is that the Patriots can win anywhere.

We could look at matchups, starting with QBs against the opposing defenses, but Tom Brady is arguably the best that has ever played the game and Eli Manning is playing at a level that, until recently, no one knew existed. Brady?s ankle is a small question mark and New England will release an official injury report on Wednesday, but Patriot IR?s are about as helpful as newspapers are to a blind man. Besides, everyone already knows that Brady is a pocket passer that does not rely heavily on his mobility and there is no way he isn?t starting this game. Maybe it?ll just take him a little longer to get downfield to celebrate with Randy Moss after a touchdown pass.

Covering the spread is one thing, but the Giants are not concerned with ?only? losing this game by 10. And for New York to win it would seem that two things need to happen. First, the Giants need to run the ball with some success so they can take a little of the pressure away from Manning. Eli is playing mistake free ball lately but a big part of that is because he has not been looked at as the sole weapon of the offense. Second, New York needs its front seven to get pressure on Brady fast enough to take away his hot reads. The Giants secondary is obviously not as strong as the front half on the defense but they can get they job done with some help. If Brady is able to sit back and pick them apart there will not be a lot to talk about in this game by the second half.

New England is a strong, consistent team that has found a way all year to take away from their opponent?s strengths while capitalizing on the opponent?s weaknesses. There isn?t a lot to say about the topic of beating the Pats that hasn?t already been said during the past four and-a-half months and so far it has all been wrong. That does not by any means say that it cannot be done this weekend in Arizona, but it is almost looking like bettors need to trust their guts on this game more than any other contest of the season.
