my Brother is an Ontario teacher and I have followed the returns of this fund. Often it pays to watch and sometimes follow where smart institutional money is going.....
Since inception fund returned 12%.
In 2004 fund returned 15%
2005 17.2% compared to balanced cdn. fund 12%.
it also beat the return (it ussually does) of the largest pension fund in Canada Caisse de Depot (Quebec Governement workers) 15%.
One time a few years ago they invested in Nexxen, I followed. Then they invested in Fording Coal, also liked the story and liked it more that the Ontario Teachers were taking a large position.
as have noted many times before sold after a good gain 50% in six months. then it doubled again
should have waited until the teachers began to reduce their position.
Claude Lamourex who has run the fund since 1990 had many interesting points but thought would highlight what he had to say about hedge funds.
``Everybody wants to get in hedge funds these days, so you have to ask yourself if now is the time to scale back,'' he said. ``When your taxi driver starts asking you questions about hedge funds, then you have to wonder what you are doing there. And the fees sometimes are ridiculous for the return that you get.''
Agree, in Cdn. the average hedge fund trailed the Cdn. index. of the 10 I track only 2 (hedge fund families) had returns that beat the index. many trailed badly.
the fees sometimes can range from 20-50%. read about a US Fund that returned 10% to investors.
their fee 50% of all positive returns. hard to beat the market over time with fees like these.....
thanks
