Anyone have any additional information on this?
Were they also out for the Ore St/Ore game?
This is an extremely major blow to Ore St's value, correct?

It is a sobering thought for Oregon State, going against 18th-ranked Pittsburgh in the Sun Bowl without the Rodgers brothers.

The possibility of playing the game with just one viable running back was equally scary for coach Mike Riley, who said Monday the situation was so dire last week he asked walk-on freshman Jordan Jenkins about giving up his redshirt year.

"I was halfway joking,'' said Riley. "He was excited about it, but also worried. ... that's really asking too much of a kid.''

Jenkins can rest easy. He won't be asked to play Superman and spell Ryan McCants against the Panthers.

But last week, Riley was considering all options.

He thought about playing cornerback Patrick Henderson at running back, or using tight ends Joe Halahuni and Gabe Miller to carry the ball in an emergency. Henderson played running back in high school.

The idea of Jenkins playing - a fantasy scenario just a few weeks ago - was also broached.

After going almost the entire regular season without a starter going down, the Beavers are going bowling with a big part of their lineup in street clothes.

Freshman sensation Jacquizz Rodgers has not officially been ruled out of the Dec. 31 game, but Riley hasn't changed his "very doubtful'' prognosis. And really, all of that is just for the Sun Bowl folks to hang onto this Quizz vs. LeSean McCoy angle for a few more days.

Sophomore wide receiver James Rodgers, meanwhile, is out with a broken collarbone sustained in the Civil War game against Oregon.

The Rodgers brothers were responsible for more than 50 percent of OSU's total offense. Can Oregon State score enough points to beat Pitt without them? We will find out.

James and Quizz have prided themselves on being durable - being practically indestructible - so this is a new experience, watching from the sidelines. ... James' arm is in a sling. Quizz still can't lift his left shoulder without feeling some pain.

"We had never been seriously injured before,'' said Jacquizz Rodgers.

"The most we had was sprained ankles.''

And yes, the brothers always managed to be ready for the game when they sprained ankles at Lamar Consolidated HS in the Houston suburbs.

For Riley, the running back situation went from dire to perilous when No. 3 tailback Jeremy Francis left the team to help take care of his ailing mother in Florida.

There were several days last week when Riley pondered the unthinkable.

National TV. ... big bowl game ... OSU trying to hold the fort for the Pac-10 against a good Big East team. ... and what happens if the No. 1 tailback gets hurt?

"I was really worried,'' said Riley, "because if something were to happen to Ryan, the adjustments we would have had to make would have been dramatic.''

Dramatic, and possibly embarrassing.

But thankfully, it didn't come to that.

Last Friday, Riley announced that Francis would join the team in El Paso on Dec. 26th and be available for the game.

Riley said Francis determined on his own - after several conversations with running backs coach Reggie Davis - that he would be able to leave his mom for a few days and re-join his teammates.

For Riley, Christmas had come early.

"When it first came up, it wasn't my place to ask him (to stay for the game),'' Riley. "I didn't want to push it, because what he was doing was the right thing to do. He talked to Reggie, and he decided he could get away for a week.''

Riley indicated it would take a minor miracle for Jacquizz Rodgers to be healthy enough to play. ... translation: he's out.

Rodgers, the Pacific 10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year, injured his left shoulder Nov. 22 at Arizona and missed the Oregon game.

He said last week X-rays showed a broken bone in his scapula (shoulder blade).

Knowing how badly Quizz wants to play, and how much Rodgers has been part of the buildup to the game, Riley has been hesitant to make a formal declaration that he's a scratch.

"I'll probably do it right before we leave (on Christmas Day) unless they tell me he's OK to make the trip and start practicing,'' said Riley. "But as I've said before, I remain very doubtful.''

Riley said Oregon State is scheduled to fly out of Portland International Airport on Thursday, but because of the snow and ice in the Portland area, "that might not be a good idea, so we're looking into (chartering) out of Eugene.''
