PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Jack Osbourne, the 17-year-old son of heavy metal star Ozzy Osbourne, has checked into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation clinic, People magazine reported.

The teenager entered Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena on April 23, according to the issue appearing on newsstands Friday. "I got caught up in my new lifestyle and got carried away with drugs and alcohol," Osbourne told the magazine. "Once I realized this, I voluntarily checked myself into a detox facility for my own health and well-being." The magazine said Osbourne acknowledged to his mother, Sharon, in January that he was overindulging in marijuana and alcohol.

Jack Osbourne is the youngest of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne's three children. He and his 18-year-old sister, Kelly, became international stars with the success of MTV's reality show The Osbournes. Their older sister, Aimee, didn't take part.

"It takes a lot of courage and strength to admit you need help, and both Sharon and I are proud Jack is facing his problems head-on," Ozzy Osbourne said.

Ozzy Osbourne has been candid, both on and off the show, about his decades of battles with substance abuse. The second season began in November on a sombre note, with the 54-year-old rock star boozing heavily to cope with his wife's diagnosis of colon cancer.

He has said since that Sharon Osborne is cancer-free after months of treatment.

In an interview last year, 50-year-old Sharon Osbourne told People magazine, "Kelly was four months old and being wheeled around the Betty Ford Center."

"The kids have always known what it does, and they know they're not going to get away if they mess with it," she said.

Last summer, Jack Osbourne injured his arm when he jumped off the Malibu Pier while surfing with members of the rock band Incubus. He also made a cameo on the TV series Dawson's Creek.

It's funny how they get let into any club and bar they want, when the bouncers all know how young he and his sister are...

Good luck Jack!

Seriously I am floored, Where on earth would a young kid like him come into contact with things such as drugs? I mean with all the good role models in Hollywood I could not imagine that he would even try drugs even if he found them there!

"It takes a lot of courage and strength to admit you need help, and both Sharon and I are proud Jack is facing his problems head-on," Ozzy Osbourne said.

This doesn't really sound like the Ozzy I know.

Besides, I'd think a real recovering addict would be ashamed at this story. I read another article about this that basically said it was booze and pot? Pot? Come on. Who goes into rehab for pot?

Ever known rich kids in rehab? They go home one night in high school after a night of drinking vodka, cry to mommy because they're puking their guts out and think they need detox.

Forgive my cynicism, but this sounds like a bullshit publicity stunt or a cry for attention more than an actual substance abuse problem.

the kid should pay attention to his father. dad is the perfect example on why you should not do drugs, he is a walking zombie.

and that's not a beer he's drinking. . .it's a 12 ounce can of "i'm a fat squishy loser who is marginally well known only because my dad is famous and my mom dreamed up a crazy way of marketing the family based upon it".

some are you people are so stupid, who the hell are you to question if a person needs rehab or not , or if they will make it or not. It is jerks like you who make me sick.

The high and mighty that acts like it is a sin to ask for help or that it is not a disease. I hope like hell none of you are parents because your not fit to be one.

You and no-one else but the person that goes to rehab knows if you have a problem or not nor do you know if they will make it.

And freak i will call you on the floor now, for someone that has said they are in the program, your statement rehab for pot what a joke, well imo you must not be working your program to good to make such a statement. a drug or a drink is all the same to a addict, does not matter what kind.

you should be ashamed of your statement or say you did not work the program right and your back to running and gunning.

Does not feel good to have your sheets pulled does it. well freak that was what you do when you question if someone has a problem when they seek help. May i suggest you my friend read your blue book a little more before you tell anyone what is right for rehab and what is not. Did not know there was different rules i never learned that in my 108 days in rehab and into the 1000's when it comes to meetings, funny i missed that one.

Might I apologize for my statements Fletch! I knew a few guys in rehab that were there for Pot and 99% of them were only there because they had been in trouble with the law and this was the only way that they could get out of trouble! They even said it themselves! Now the drinking part i am all for him! I have just never been one to think that pot was the big call to arms for running off to rehab!

Fletch, Look up at the top and see where I wished him luck! I am an Alcoholic and I work my program just damn fine! I have 6 months of sobriety and attend NA and AA! I just have never seen anybody and that is not to say that they do exist but never have I seen a person that has destroyed their lives and lost everything because they smoked a little weed! Now I was a Full on Meth head and Coke Head and Alky! I had a problem!

The part I don't like is the Whole attitude that the kid has had and that is the point........I should have said that! Jack Osbourne to me is the biggest dipshit I have ever seen and I let his personality cloud my judgement on my statements and did not use the right principles!

Maybe I am wrong Fletch............And when I am, I am man enough to admit it! I made my comments in haste and wish to apologize to my fellow recovering addicts and alcoholics!

In my opinion, this kid's problem is not necessarily drugs/alcohol but having too much time on his hands and the world at his beckon call. How long has it been since he dropped out of school? He doesn't work so he filled his empty hours partying--big shocker. If he doesn't find something constructive to do when he comes out of rehab, rehab will be a waste.

Not that I blame the guy though...if I had the chance to sit around, do nothing, not work, party, and count the millions I stand to inherit, I wouldn't be too motivated either.

Glad you are still in the program and great job on 6 months keep it up.

yes many do go to rehab to get out of trouble and not to help themself., but that is not up to us as brothers and sisters in the program to judge all we can judge is are own problem with the matter.

It has been proven on case study after study that most people in the program for harder durgs and booze starterd out with beer and pot. It might not effect some people but those with the disease it is the buliding block of self destruction and this has been proven. So does not matter what your getting help for the key is why you are getting help and that those in the program pass no judgement on any but themselve.

good luck and glad you wrote back and are still working it:)

Fletcher -- I completely agree it's pretty low to rip someone in rehab, but some of these celebs seem to wear their rehab stays like a badge of honor. If the kid is sincere and wants to get well, I question whether he'd be going to People Magazine about it.

Checking into rehab is just another way these folks stay in the public eye.

I know people, as does probably everyone here, that have lost money, jobs, houses, wives, kids, and lives because of substance abuse. I don't put this 17 year old rich kid pot head in the same category.

This Osbourne clan has been nothing but a marketing gimmick since they hit the TV a couple years ago. If some of us think this rehab thing is just a publicity stunt, its their own fault for making every other aspect of their lives a publicity stunt.

No disrespect to you though, Fletcher. I think that these celebs treating rehab and detox like a trip to Disneyworld is the real disrespect here.
